Thank you for taking the time to contact us and for your many years of custom. We appreciate your feedback and understand your frustration regarding the VAT treatment of some jewellery lots.

The application of VAT on the hammer price is not determined by whether an item is considered desirable, wearable or likely to achieve a higher sale price. It is based on the VAT status of the consignor and the way in which the item has been consigned for sale.

Some lots are sold under the Auctioneers' Margin Scheme, where VAT is not charged on the hammer price. Others are sold under the Standard VAT Scheme, where VAT must legally be charged on the hammer price in addition to the buyer's premium. Fellows does not decide which scheme is applied based on the value or appeal of an item; it is determined by HMRC VAT regulations and the circumstances of the consignment.

As the mix of consignors changes from one auction to another, the proportion of lots sold under each VAT scheme can also change. We appreciate that this may make it appear that more wearable jewellery is attracting VAT on the hammer price, but this is not a pricing strategy or an additional charge introduced by Fellows.

We understand that the total cost to buyers has increased once the buyer's premium, VAT where applicable, and delivery charges are taken into account. We appreciate that this affects bidding decisions, and we will pass your comments on to the relevant team.
