Excellent Insurer

I was with them with my last Syrian hamster Rolo and my most recent Syrian Hamster Stormi. They have paid every claim I have made directly to my vets, promptly and with minimal fuss - even my vets were surprised how promptly they pay out. When my hamsters have passed, they have been sympathetic - refunding partial premium but still paying the ongoing claims. There have been minor amounts not paid (such as specialist foods), but this has been clearly explained by their terms and fair. Any email queries are dealt with clearly and fairly and I believe they are one of few insurers worth having for exotics. Overall, I have enjoyed the peace of mind of knowing I can take my hamsters into the vets whenever they need, without being stung by an unaffordable bill.

Immoral shysters conning exotic pet owners with bogus policies

Exotic Direct is a scam operating under the pretence of a pet insurance company. Having made consistent payments for my parrot for the last 7 years, I was of the understanding that the stress of unexpected vets bills were contained within my policy. Imagine then, how shocked I was when my parrot developed a feather condition which required £730 of blood tests and my claim was rejected.
It turns out that the TCs of the policy are so convoluted, that there seems to be a clause for pretty much every eventuality to ensure there is no risk of Exotics Direct paying out.
Advice to anyone looking to cover the vets bills for their exotic; spend the equivalent amount you would spend on an Exotics Direct policy by paying a reputable insurer, or pop it into a savings account. To be fair, you can do anything you like with the money, just don't hand it over to these crooks!

Incredibly disappointed!

What can I say, I am with this I durable since 2003, which is Avery long time! I always had my pet snakes insured without any issues! I have added snakes without extra costs, I have removed others when they passed away. I now wanted to add a new ball Python and been told that I can have her added with extra costs. On the website it states that I can include 3 snakes on one policy without extra costs. Customer service is inpatient, ignoring my questions and not being very helpful at all! It is almost impossible to bring my request through without it being an extremely painful and stressful experience! If I have to pay extra money for each snake, what is the point of having them all on one policy?! It makes more sense having a policy for each of them! At least I would have them insured for £1,000 each a year instead of £1,000 together a year. The premium is the exact same! Because I said "I am getting freaking stressed about this all" I was threatened that if I am "rude" she will disconnect the call on which I hanged up now because if I cannot even say the word "freaking" which btw is NO swear word and can be found in any dictionary as a valid expression as wording; then I no longer want to speak either! And I only said that I am getting g freaking stressed because after I asked one question for about an half hour without any answer given, I was getting freaking stressed about that and still am. I am extremely upset about this experience! Exotic direct was superb one time, sadly it has gone down the hill very badly! I am now will be looking to find another insurance which accepts snakes as for me, I am done!!!!!!

A better outcome now 8th Nov 2023 We’ve had first class for…

We’ve had first class insurance for our two skunks. The vet caused their problems refusing to remove damaged scent glands from birth until one was 14 months the other 18months
As a result they have fissures & paralysis in their bowel. We manage the issue so quality of life has been improved less infections less pain. The vet is also very aggressively expensive. So would their option be pay up or next time put him to sleep???
I didn’t realise the insurance company were taken over in 2023 by Hedge Fund!!!
Now I understand why we had the phone call to say my Boy can’t continue to be covered they’ve changed the terms of the contract!!
Now one of the boys is unable to be covered for his problems we’ve encountered over the years.
I have had no complaints other than our instant dismissal from this part of his care. we’ve been with them 14 years. I’ve found them an excellent service. It’s the Hedge now in charge that wants less cover but take the same monies.
There’s the rub!!!!
Is this a breach of contract?

I have to highly recommend this service from exotic direct my concerns have been investigated & as a result my two boys are back under full cover. No breaches just a massive misunderstanding on their part. One of which we were unaware of once cleared up Things fell into place. The actions of the company after contacting us were swift efficient & professional as well as considerate I’m soooo very grateful & at peace. I’m so sorry for others less so I wish them well & to recover their losses.

My parrot passed during Friday night

I’ve been with this company for years . My parrot passed during Friday night. Called company to ask advice (closed) so emailed no reply so called vets for advice told best to take a photo and then bury my bird. Did all that well breaking my heart. Phoned them first thing this morning only be told by reception that should have post mortem with in 72 hours . I just broke my heart , I can’t dig him up . I just can’t I’ve put the claim form in . Will leave it with them

Not paying for vet costs

I took my parrot to the vet a couple of years ago with skin infection, at renewal one of the exceptions is now skin condition, so if my parrot ever have it again, I could not claim for it and now, after my parrot has barber his feathers to believed to be due to anxiety, exotic direct has decided that this is a behavioral issue due to the medication given as my parrot is healthy otherwise and they will not pay the over £700 on vets fees that I have spend. Unfortunately there is no other insurances that insure birds in the UK, other ways I will not insure with them.

Pointless

Took out insurance policy for Kakariki and was lead to believe that can claim for anything including routine check up appointments. Requested claim for check up appt for Rio and was adv that policy doesn't cover it i guess that you need to pay extra if you want to claim for basics which is ludicrous. Will keep policy the now but unlikely to renew typical insurance company if they find a way not to pay out they won't extremely disappointed.

Fast claim processing and refunds.

When I adopted a Czech wolfdog 11 years ago, Exotic Direct were the only company that would agree to insure her. And I have never regretted that forced option.
They have processed all my claims within 2-3 days of receiving completed forms from my vet. And my refunds always follow quickly within 4-5 days. Not once have they questioned or rejected my claims.
I have also always been able to speak with someone on the phone - although hardly ever needed to since the claim process is so efficient. I trust them and highly recommend them.
Completely baffled by the negative reviews.

Dealt with claims perfectly

I had a policy for 5 years and never had to claim, until my pygmy hedgehog developed health issues.
Exotic direct dealt with all claims quickly and efficiently, paying my vet directly.
I have no hesitation in recommending them.

Brilliant

I really don't recognise the company from the other reviews. I've been so impressed with Exotic Direct. They've always been very responsive to emails, very friendly, knowledgeable staff on the phone and really quick decision and payout of claims. We've had several medical problems with our guinea pigs over the last 6 months and they've been compassionate and helpful each time. One of our ongoing problems is dental, which is only covered 50%, but that was clear in the initial documentation.

So I just want to say thank you to them for making some very difficult times a bit more bearable.

Terrible customer service

They don’t pay any money for your claim! This company only know how to take your money every month. Claim take nearly 3 months! Time wasters.

Very poor service

Claim process took over two months! After contacting customer service twice I’ve received reply that they will not pay for my claim. They are good just to take your money, don’t care about your pet. Avoid this company!

No one answers the phone or emails!

Seems there’s no one to answer the telephone nor to reply to emails. I’ve sent three emails asking for confirmation they’ve received my renewal payment-still no response. I won’t be renewing next time. Poor service.

Paid out on a claim

Helpful company when I put in a claim as my ferret jumped out the Xmas tree. He fell, was an emergency vets job and racked up about £350 of vet bills. I submitted a claims form which was pretty straight forward. Took a little over 6 weeks for it to be processed but they just paid the vets directly. Was pretty hassle free, I have no issues.

I phoned recently & the lady was so helpful & completed all I needed to do with speed & efficiency! One pet taken off & two put on with no hassle at all!

I can't fault exotic direct for the…

I can't fault exotic direct for the kindness they've shown when I've had to call to remove my rats from cover and when I've had to claim. They've given the right information first time on every call. Highly recommend, the claims are settled promptly as well. I wouldn't look elsewhere. Fantastic.
