If I can give less than one star I…
If I could give less than one star, I would. Wellington Ferry Terminal Europcar is a scam. They refused to return my deposit and created fake charges. Even after I proved with clear evidence that they were wrong, they only refunded part of my money and still won’t explain the extra fees.
I’ve been dealing with them for nearly two weeks and getting nowhere. If you’re a tourist, don’t even think about renting from Europcar — they will keep your deposit and invent expenses to justify it.
I’ve now disputed the charges with my bank. Let’s see if we can resolve this issue with these scammers and their overcharging tactics.
Pressured Into an Upgrade, Then Charged Twice
Our experience with Europcar New Zealand completely spoiled the start of our holiday.
After a long flight from the UK, we were pressured into upgrading from the Chery we had already booked and paid for. Staff insisted our luggage would not fit, despite us later seeing that the Chery would have been perfectly adequate. Two days later, the Christchurch manager apologised for the pressure selling and agreed that our North Island vehicle would be changed back to a car equivalent to our original booking.
When we arrived in Wellington, this agreement had not been honoured. We were again offered a much larger vehicle and had to accept the smallest one available because there was no suitable alternative.
The biggest issue came after the rental. We were charged approximately £240, then around £540, and finally a further £802 without any proper invoice or explanation. After examining Europcar's calculations, it appears they charged us twice for the first 30 days of the rental, as well as duplicating one-way, additional driver and other fees. Despite repeated requests, they have still failed to provide a satisfactory explanation.
We have hired many cars around the world and have never experienced such poor customer service or confusing billing. We cannot recommend Europcar New Zealand and would advise others to carefully check every charge before leaving the rental desk.
Pointless booking system only to be…
Pointless booking system only to be told at pick up we never selected any cover which was a lie.
Then Force into only two options medium or high cover or couldn't takt the car.
Rental ended up costing over double what we preselected online due to being lied to and upsold something we never wanted.
Deceitful company
I am extremely disappointed in my interaction with this rental company. I rented a vehicle for a month from Wellington airport and did everything in my power to ensure that it was well taken care of. One day after returning the vehicle I received an email stating there was damage to the vehicle. It was impossible to get a hold of anyone by phone so I went to the location. In the email it described the vehicle needed to be inspected and it would take a few days. Lo and behold it was nowhere to be found as it was immediately rented out once more. I was told that the inspection was all to be done by phone and that it would once again take a few days. Two days later I received one more email with a picture noting a scuff mark on a door. This company is requesting I pay $1000 to repair a scuff! Something that can be buffed out in five minutes. I was extremely surprised that upset that this was all done without ever physically inspecting the vehicle and renting it out immediately. Unfortunately I didn't read reviews prior to making my rental. Had I done so I would have seen that this company engages in this type of deception on a regular basis. DO NOT RENT FROM THEM!
Endless fee disputes
Our rental was a new Ford Ranger with less that 5000kms on it. On the last day I noticed smoke coming from the engine bay, no warning lights were on the dash. I discovered that whole underside of the engine and all the way back to the tailgate was covered in oil. There had been a failure of a gasket or seal somewhere in the system.
I was not able to get in contact with anyone from Eurpocar, it was 5:15pm. I was able to get roadside assistance out and towed to Wellington where the truck was due to be returned.
Subsequently, Europcar has charged me for returning the truck low on fuel at the contract fuel price. I had to fight this as I was unable to drive the truck back to the rental office. After many calls and emails they agreed to only charge me for the fuel at market prices.
Now they are trying to charge me for the roadside assistance as they consider it an oil change which is a service. They even sent an email stating that mechanical failures are covered but driver induced errors and services were not. I am now fighting this too.
My recommendation is first to not hire from Europcar and secondly, if you have an issue like mine just keep driving the car until the engine seizes. Then it is a clear cut mechanical failure. You will do no favours to yourself by treating the vehicle well and being responsible. All that will happen is Europcar will simply nickel and dime you for costs.
My rental ended March 16th, I am still dealing with these erroneous fees and charges today, May 8th.
This is one of the worst experiences…
This is one of the worst experiences ever. We hired a hybrid car from Auckland as we wanted to save on fuel. The woman at collection was rude and offhand and said there is no damage at all to the car and you must return it fully charged and full of fuel.
We checked the car over there was multiple areas of minor damage. We also noticed that the electrics were empty and the fuel was not completely full. We photographed everything and rang head office and then sent them an email as requested.
We never heard anything about any of this and there was nowhere to charge between pick up and drop off so paying extra for a hybrid was a waste of time.
We sustained a very small chip in the windscreen from a truck.
Upon return I got an email saying that the chip was being charged at more than $3000. I argued this and also asked about the lack of it having no charge and not being full of fuel. They brushed this off and kept insisting on the price of the windscreen repair. I asked for an official repair invoice prior to them taking the money from my credit card. They refused and said they could take it anyway to the amount they want.
I have still had no luck with regards to the fraudulent contract and the lack of proof of the amount of the repair. We have now gone legal to get what we are owed- which they said they don't care about.
DO NOT USE THEM - THEY ARE SCAMMERS AND THEY JUST WANT MORE MONEY.
I wouldn't even give it one star
I wouldn't even give it one star, we gave the car back in the same condition we got it but reception guy didn't want to go and inspect it with us and then we got an email with photos of a lot of damage to the car and were told it was caused by us!!!!!!!! I wasn't going to fall for it and so they quickly changed their minds and said they've reviewed it snd it wasn't caused by us!!!!!!! So many people I have spoken to about it said they had the same experience with this company, I will warn everyone person I talk to about this company and have been doing so so that no one else has to go through the trauma we went through, they shouldn't be able to get away with this....a very very disgruntled first and last customer that's for sure.
Was scammed by this company
Was scammed by this company. Hired car from Wellington Airport for 2 days. Returned car full of fuel ( filled at Z Broadway at airport). Next day noticed credit card transaction for tank of fuel! Europcar impossible to deal with, even when receipts for fuel were emailed to them. Contacted my bank who investigated and after stressful 2 weeks reversed the charge back to my new c card as I had to cancel the original at banks advice so Europcar couldn't access it again. Be very careful with trusting this lot with your card details. Never again using this company.
Do Not Rent from Europe car
Do Not Rent from Europe car, they stole money from me and refused to return it, the said I got a ticket which I did not (I proved to them I didn’t) and they still charged me for this and a processing fee which they refused to refund dispite it being a paperwork error on their end how do I get charged a processing/admin fee and for a ticket that didn’t exist
What a terrible company
What a terrible, terrible company. Stay right away, good people! They will charge you like a wounded bull for things you never booked for...and their harassment will go on for months.
Very disappointing experience with staff
Very disappointing experience with Europcar. The manager, Shazia, was extremely rude and unprofessional. I was asked to provide a passport at pickup, which was never mentioned in the booking confirmation.
When I asked her to show where this requirement was stated, she refused and instead cancelled my booking on the spot. Later, customer service confirmed that she cancelled it herself and didn’t even leave any notes explaining the reason.
This lack of transparency and accountability is unacceptable. Because of this, my entire trip was disrupted. Europcar seriously needs to improve how managers.
Not recommended at all….
Don't go to europcar christchurch airport
ABSOLUTE ZERO STARS The worst experience i have ever had, do not go through them ! no paperwork provided, upselling cars when not required, exploit the vulnerable (especially tired or weary travellers) and the costs they charge is NOT what you see online. last but not least my deposit has not been returned as they have been very dodgy and stated that the car was returned 3 hours late but it was not !!! the car was returned bang on time at the airport counter in Christchurch NZ (i am following this up with airport security cameras), DO not let your family members or yourself go through the stress. Avoid europcar (Christchurch airport nz)and routes rentals at all costs . If my issue isn't resolved and i don't get my deposit back i am going to keep hassling the company and place bad reviews. They are literal thiefs and won't let them get away with it. If they pay me what they owe me i will delete reviews, if not i am going to keep fighting for my rights.
A total disgrace and very stressful to…
A total disgrace and very stressful to rent with this company. I booked a car for five days from Wellington. Return to Wellington. Pick up in Wellington was arranged for 4 pm. But as I realise the ferry arrives at 5:30 I tried to change the pick up time to 6 pm. Was told that the office closes at 5 pm in for a surcharge. I could change pick up to 6 pm. But for that I had to cancel my booking and make a new one. My prepaid money will come to my account in 3 to 4 weeks. What an unprofessional lot and what a rip off. The drop off was just as difficult. As the office opens at 12:30pm and the barge to Picton leaves at 12:30 pm. All enquiries to Euro car are done via Manila or somewhere else in the world where they don’t have a clue how this all works. How can you have an office at the ferry terminal and close before the barge arrives and open at the same time when the barge leaves don’t book with this company as they have lost the plot and don’t care about customer service. Now I have to wait for four weeks for my refund whilst I’ll have to make a booking with another company. That is a little bit more user-friendly in relation to fairy times between the two islands. The whole thing is just absolutely pathetic okay?
Reservation Wasn't Available
With seven months notice of our reservation, and a few days prior reconfirmation, we arrived to not having the vehicle available. We had requested an eight passenger kia or ford transit. Upon arrival, we were told that neither vehicle was available but they could "upgrade" us to a twelve passenger van. This was definitely not an upgrade! The entire passenger windows were covered in painted on advertisement for Europcar rental, and none of us could see out the back windows. Imagine traveling so far to view the beautiful countryside of New Zealand and only seeing blurry views out the window for a week strike. So disappointing!
Very Disappointed
Booked the car through a third party. Once we got to the Europcar desk to pick up the car they did a massive up-sell. Asked for more money and a large deposit even though I had paid the other company.
We got to the car and it had a massive dent along the driverside. It looked horrendous which we weren't told about.
After we haded the car back, I was charged an extra $420 for no explanation and my deposit wasn't refunded. I've made a complaint, but it takes 7 working days for them to respond, I had a response on the 7th day saying they would look into it.
Poor service, damaged car, over-charging. Very disappointed and would never us them again.
This is a scam
This is a scam. There was no incident and to get the damage assessment since there was not even a minor incident.
They take advantage of unsuspecting customers - who may have missed conducting a vehicle inspection prior receiving/returning the car to earn their living.
Customer before me might have inspected their car before and after and since Europcar was unable to make money ethically from them, they passed it on me. There is no use of their fair wear and tear policy and it is drafted to con customers who will believe that they actually follow the policy.
To provide those $$$ damage costs for minor scratches is excessive and daylight robbery especially since the car was well taken care of.
I will never use Europcar in NZ or anywhere in the world and sure provide a review for being targeted for the scam they are running under the guise of the rental car.
Poor poor ethics. I can understand why they have just 1-star review stating exactly the situation I am going through. Its their tried and tested method to extract money unfairly.
Stay away from them. Their car may be cheaper than others but thats coz of what they will try to extract claiming damage
Had a great experience at the Europcar…
Had a great experience at the Europcar counter in Queenstown with Nikita and Ayush.
Nikita and Ayush went out of the way to assist me.
Such behaviour shows how important it is for Europcar to take care of their guests and the service attitude that both showed exemplifies this.
Cheers,
Sanjay Maheshwari
if i could give it a 0 i would
if i could give it a 0 i would, bunch of scammers who willblame you for “damage to the car” when you haven’t done anything to it. Never hire from this place and check your bank transactions in case they have taken money from you.
DANIEL
First, I rent a car with keddy's car rental and ended up being a different company "EUROPCAR" the worst company in NZ, poor customer service, and the deposit policy is very suspicious, it takes 4 weeks to get my $500 deposit refund and the transaction just disappeared from my bank statement, the bank didn't know anything about this kind of transactions and it was a nightmare to get my money back. AVOID THIS COMPANY.
