Avoid Drivalia – Excessive Charges and Appalling Customer Service

I booked a small car with Drivalia two weeks before travelling to Belfast. Unfortunately, my flight was delayed by 1 hour and 30 minutes, so I called them as a courtesy to let them know. I was told they would only hold my booking for one hour, after which it would be cancelled and I would have to rebook. No mention was made of additional charges.
As an airport car rental company, you would expect them to understand that flight delays happen. Instead, arriving just 30 minutes beyond their holding time resulted in an absolute nightmare.
The rental office is several miles from the airport, making it inconvenient to reach. They provide a shuttle, but my journey was made particularly unpleasant by the driver’s constant swearing and foul language. Hardly professional customer service.
At the office, I dealt with the same employee I had spoken to on the phone. After completing the checks, he told me he needed to cancel my original booking, despite me standing right there ready to collect a car, with vehicles parked outside. His explanation was, “You don't book the car, you book the timeslot.”Why would you have different prices for different timeslots? Frankly, this sounded like a convenient excuse to justify what happened next.
Only after completing the paperwork was I told I had to pay an additional £167.88, including £95 plus VAT for being 30 minutes late due to a flight delay outside my control. I was also charged for a much larger car than the small one I had originally booked. The result? More than three times the price of my original reservation, with no warning of these charges when I called earlier.
To top it all off, the employee told me I shouldn't book through third-party agents because I had booked through Vipcars.com. If Drivalia has a problem with third-party bookings, it should sort that out with its booking partners rather than springing unexpected costs on customers at the desk.
This experience was a disgrace: poor communication, unprofessional behaviour and excessive, unexpected charges. Penalising customers for flight delays and then charging them substantially more for a different-sized vehicle is an appalling way to do business.
I would strongly advise others to think twice before booking with Drivalia. What appeared to be an affordable rental ended up costing more than three times the original price. I certainly won't be using them again.

I was in the Belfast International branch. The customer service was amazing. Very polite, helpful and listened to my (high) demands patiently. I dealt with RK great guy to deal with. Will definitely recommend.

Worst experience ever. Unprofesional and a complete wastw of time. They only had a lousy car with broken brakes!!! Can you believe it? The only thing they could do was cancelling the booking. No alternative or willing to help. They should be closed!

Very expensive extra charges were applied after booking. My own fault though for not reading all the small print. First a £150 excess charge non refundable. Then a £72 charge for going over the border. Then a £62 charge for going over the mileage. A van for 3 days that I thought was costing £90 cost me £374. Very friendly, genuine staff & the van was perfect but very expensive for a short term hire.

Great service ⭐️ Nick was a total gem! So helpful and professional (and also funny as! If you’re lucky you’ll hear his dad jokes). 10/10 would recommend.

Easy straightforward and friendly.

Excellent service and value for money. Rented car for 4 days. Was picked up by shuttle 5 mins after phoning.
The process at pick up was straightforward, quick and the staff member (RG) friendly and professional.
The car was new and was a pleasure to drive.
The return process was equally as efficient and the shuttle back to the airport was immediate.
Great staff, great value and great service.
I look forward to using this company again.
