Concerned by Premature Repair Recommendations and Unnecessary Warnings

I recently took my vehicle to Eco Test in Bracknell regarding a steering-related concern. While the staff were polite, I was left feeling very uncomfortable with the overall experience.

The issue I initially attended for was not clearly confirmed, yet I was presented with a number of additional warnings and potential repair costs relating to other parts of the vehicle that I had not originally asked to be investigated. This left me feeling under pressure and uncertain as to whether all of the recommendations were genuinely necessary at this stage.

To be fair, after monitoring the vehicle for almost a week since the inspection, the steering noise has not returned and the car has been driving normally.

I appreciate that garages have to advise customers based on what they observe, but in my case I felt the conclusions and suggested costs were premature and definitely not justified by the symptoms actually present at the time.

I would recommend that customers always seek a second opinion elsewhere before committing to any major repair work with this garage.

Rung about replacing coil springs and…

Rung about replacing coil springs and shocks on front aygo said would ring back 2 days later no reply sounds like they don't won't the work on my partner's car why can't they tell someone we are not interested I only live 5 minutes from them. Not going to bother with the garage

So kind and helpful

I can't praise this service centre highly enough. I was driving from South Wales to Surrey when the oil light came on, and I remembered the great service we had from these guys years ago when we lived in the area, so I pulled in and asked them to sell me some oil, and put it in for me. They (Benny!) GAVE me a litre of oil, put it in, and didn't charge me anything. What absolute kindness.Thank you so much.

ECO Test and James - Excellent Service!

Contacted the ECO Test Centre as I had an emissions warning light on my dashboard. Dropped the car off two days early in case they could fit it in. They certainly did - diagnosed the problem ordered the replacement parts and fitted them before my original appointment was even due! James was extremely helpful and installed Waze on to my Audi screen something I had asked the main dealer about without getting any help. Excellent work and Customer Service - I now have a new servicing company!!

Touting for unnecessary work at ridiculous prices!

Booked my car in for a service it had passed a recent mot elsewhere and had new tyres, after the service I was sent a long list of red and amber warnings on things that were totally unnecessary. Including tyres that had only just been replaced. Not just a few quid either 2k worth of work on a car not worth much more than that. I am stunned at all the good reviews. A friend of mine was even told by this place that the air conditioning needed sorting, the car did not even have air conditioning, so that just sums this place up!

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent experience with us, I am sorry to hear that we didn’t meet your expectations. We are focused here on customers safety and their experience, as we know without our customers, we aren’t anything.

I have reviewed the Red and amber work that was required for your vehicle. Please see my findings listed below;
Red items
Your rear wiper blade is split – This isn’t just important for the drivers view of the road, this can damage the rear windscreen also if the wiper isn’t working as it was intended.
Your vehicle has a turbo boost leak is and hisses when revved – This needed to be further investigated but was evident from the oil leaking around the intercooler and the noise that could be heard from the engine bay. This is important as it could cause damage to surrounding items if not resolved resulting in possible component failure .
Your battery failed the load test – Currently testing as 540/800 amps which is over 30% down on capacity and will get progressively worse. This could result in the vehicle not starting when you most need it.

Amber items
Your front brake discs are 92% worn and are only 0.3mm above the manufacturers' safety specification – Your brake discs are measuring as 30.3mm thickness and the minimum is 30.0 (mm). These are getting very close and are advised to be renewed in the near future as recommended by the manufacturer.

The drivers side rear tyre is starting to perish and crack – The rear tyre is cracking and perishing on the outer edge, both the front tyres are new but the drivers side rear tyre is aged. This will get progressively worse over time.

As we fully appreciate that unexpected repair bills are hard for anyone to deal with. We always try to do as much as we can for our customers and offer 0% interest free split payments, in-depth reports using figures and measurement and photographs to best inform our customers.

In reference to the Air conditioning on your friends vehicle, this is very strange never miss sell or miss inform our customers, we know if you look after the customer they will look after you. We always supply our customers with facts and measurements to show what is required for their vehicle. I would need the vehicles registration to have a look into this further.

Good service at Eco test

Easy to make an appointment. Email and text reminders with details of times to drop car off and very polite and informed man in reception area, which I might add has been cleaned up considerably since I was last in there.
I was Informed of issues found in the service and of price of repairs before going ahead with works.
Also informed of completion of work and able to pay online before collection.
Clear explanation of what had been done to the car when collecting the keys. Very happy with my experience today.

Fantastic service and great value …

Don’t often get the time to write reviews but as a loyal customer of Ecotest and with a very recent service/MOT ,I can only say that they are outstanding. Shout out to Harry and the lads in the office as well as the fantastic mechanics. Great prices compared to the big dealerships and quality support whenever needed. Keep up the great work Ecotest !

Not very honest, try to tout for unnecessary extra work

Booked in for a rear Caliper and pads as my usual garage are booked up for a month. They sent me an email saying Urgent action required with a price quote of £4646.13, for things that were not fully required.
Some of the things being an engine service (was done a month ago),
a coolant change (for £94.50) the coolant was changed last week by my normal garage as one of my coolant pipes had burst,
the air conditioning needs a service because it’s not getting cold enough apparently (not sure how this is urgent) A small leak on the power steering which was resolved by power steering leak repair fluid by my honest garage, a few weeks ago.
This isn’t the first time they have done something like this before. A previous car failed MOT for discs and pads. So I stated I would change them myself. Bought new ones only to find they old ones were barely worn. The garage had no choice but to refund me the discs and pads and offered me a free MOT retest, and they had made a mistake. Thought as this was about 8 years ago and they had changed management I would try them again, but it would appear they are still touting for work that is not necessary.

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent experience. I am sorry to hear we didn’t meet your expectations. We take every review very seriously and assess each situation to ensure our high standards are met. I have reviewed the job from start to finish and this is my findings.

We appreciate that this is a large quote, and it can be distressing to receive a quote of this amount on a beloved vehicle. As broken down in the email with the quote a major part of this was the power steering rack, due to the vehicles rarity this part is only available from Jeep Main dealer this was reflected in the cost of £2500 for the part alone. Not to mention the labour complexity of the steering rack located around the subframe. With the previous repair which had been done by another garage using stop leak to attempt to stop the leaking seals, the only certain fix we can offer is the replacement of the part itself as there is still signs of power steering fluid leaking and the reservoir was the below the minimum. This could cause damage to further items in the power steering system.
As referenced, we quoted for an Oil Service in the email as there is no record in the vehicle or on our system of a service. We advised within the email that we had no record of this and advised it is carried out yearly as recommended by the manufacturer.
Further to the coolant change we discussed the fact that the manufacturers minimum specification of coolant strength measures at -27 degrees, your vehicle is currently testing as -24 degrees this is below the manufactures required strength. We advised the vehicle is taken back to the previous repair garage and the strength is increased.
We advised the air conditioning was not working properly as the temperature readings of your vehicle where 18 degrees outside the vehicle and 13 degrees inside the vehicle (Testing as 28% efficient). A system with the correct gas amount and a well-maintained system should be lowering the in-car temperature to between 5-8 degrees (Between 100-50% efficient). We advised the system is service as the oil in the air conditioning system degrades of a 2-year period and if left too long can turn acidic and damage the system costing a lot more than a simple air conditioning service.
In reference to the previous situation, I cannot speak on something so long ago. But what I can say is we work daily to ensure we offer the highest standards of service and clarity to our customers. As with the vehicle health check we provided to you today with all the manufacturers minimums and your current measurements of wearing items supported by pictures of failing items. We try to offer as much information as possible to our customers to give them a clear picture of their vehicle. As you have stated we don’t get everything right, but we do everything we can to improve our service and do right by our customers.
I am sorry you feel we came across as condescending this was never our intention. We are very passionate here about our service and what we do. With customer first focus at the heart of what we do. We had concerns that the safety aspects of your vehicle weren’t clear with the tyres having 2 mm of tread remaining (Legal limit 1.6mm) and the brake discs being on the manufacturers limit raising the potential of the brakes overheating.

False MOT fail

I took my car for an MOT to Bracknellmot Ecotest and it failed. They gave me £833.40 quote to fix it. It sounded expensive to me, so I went to my regular mechanic to fix it. When he looked at my car he couldn't see any problems. He has showed me that the problems don't exist. So, I went back to Bracknellmot Ecotest and asked them to show me the problem (why my car has failed the MOT), but they have refused to do it; they have insisted that I have to pay for another full MOT test (£54.85) for them to do it. Later, when I looked at their document, it says that I can retest (within the 10 days) for half price (£27.43). Also, when I went to my mechanic, after realizing that there are no problems with my car, he rang them to get the explanation. They said that they would ring him back. When I went back to them, on the same day, they have told me that they spoke to my mechanic, and he agrees that the car has a problem. I rang my mechanic but he says that they didn't ring him back, and my car if fine, there are no problems with it. So, I went to another garage to do the MOT and my car has passed the test. This is very disappointing. I wouldn't not recommend them at all. Rudika

Thank you for taking the time to review your experience. I am sorry for the delayed response as we have only just signed up to trust pilot. We take every review very seriously and assess each situation to ensure our high standards are met. I have reviewed the job from start to finish and this is my findings.

I appreciate MOT failures can be distressing, especially as we all rely on our cars so much these days. I have reviewed the MOT inspection sheet and the vehicle failed on both the front lower suspension arms having excessively worn bushes. We sent over the technician’s report at the time to show you the photos of you suspension arm bushes which showed the bushes had deteriorated to the point you could see the internals of the bush which is a safety issue. Further to this we advised that both front tyres where heavily worn on the inner edge indicating worn suspension components. Both the suspension arms and the tyres have been advised on the later pass MOT Test by the other garage.

The vehicle also failed on the drivers side front wheel bearing having excessive play. This is a difficult MOT fail to back up with photo’s but has been mentioned on all the MOT Tests since 2019 (4 Times) as an advisory. I assure you all MOT tests are carried out by highly qualified & skill Technicians who have the customers safety alone as their interest.

In reference to the Full MOT Test, I have reviewed the comments from the Job sheet and I can see the vehicle came back in for the retest to be done and the vehicle failed the retest as no repairs had been carried out. As every MOT test must be logged onto the Government MOT system once the retest is logged on a result has to be provided as the vehicle was still unsafe this had to be logged as a failure. Due to the Government MOT regulation, they only offer 1 Retest and if that fails a full MOT Test is required. As you mentioned the retest fee (Set by the Government) is £27.43 as we discussed we did not charge this to you and we advise unfortunately due to the Government regulations the next time would have to be a full test.

I can see from the email trail we sent the support photos and MOT test report to yourself to assist your Mechanic. I understand the vehicle has now passed elsewhere without these repairs being carried out. I urge you to repair these items as they are safety critical to the vehicle and if these where to fully fail mechanically this could cause catastrophic damage.
