Wolfburn is a multi-award-winning whisky distillery on the north coast of mainland Scotland. Building work commenced in the summer of 2012 and Wolfburn was reopened after some 150 years in early 2013. In 1821 William Smith founded a distillery on the outskirts of Thurso and named it Wolfburn after the watercourse it drew from, “burn” being the Scots word for stream or small river. The distillery was constructed from hardy local Caithness flagstone and the remains of its foundations can still be seen today. Smith invested heavily in Wolfburn and it quickly became a significant producer of malt whisky – tax records from the early 19th Century show it being the largest distillery in Caithness. In 1826 its annual production was 28,056 “Total Gallons of Proof Spirt” – roughly 125,000 litres. The new Wolfburn distillery building is just a short walk along the burn from the old site towards the sea. A mixture of ex-bourbon casks and ex-Olorosso sherry butts have been used so far in the maturation of this aromatic, mildly smokey delicious Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Our master craftsmen fashion their whisky the same way it has always been made: by hand, using only the finest ingredients, and without haste. Now available worldwide in over 38 countries.

Wonderful tasting tour
Do not be putt off by the exterior of the destillery. It does not look like anything special at first, but the tour and the tasting itself was one of the best visits we made during our holiday. The whisky itself was not known to us beforehand, but we bought a bottle of each of the five core whiskies after our return to Germany. A must-visit.

Great Guide and lovely distillery
Our guide showed us around very well and had lots of interesting details to tell. The tour felt much more natural, like people having fun, instead of a list of topics to talk about to check off.

Whiskey order
Whiskey ordered from Wolfburn's website, bottles arrived a few days later. Well packaged, using sturdy boxes and shredded cardboard so easily recycled.

Delightful lightly peated whisky. My only problem is that I run out too quickly as I introduce others to Wolfburn and it disappears quite quickly. Will have to buy 2 bottles instead of one!

Worthwhile experience
Fun experience, made better by the fact it was small enough to allow us to walk right through the distillery and see it in action. The guide was friendly and informative, and the samples were well explained. Would recommend a visit.

We would thoroughly recommend visiting Wolfburn. Wilma was a fantastic tour guide! Engaging, friendly and knowledgeable..even when we took her ‘off piste’
We have done many distillery tours and this one was the best so far. A small independent company with traditional values and excellent customer service. Well done 👏🏻
Had 7 tasters of whisky (loved the Morven) which at 11.30 in the morning really set me up for the day!

Gorgeous product, amazing company.
Having tried and bought the Northland, I bought the sample bottle pack…following those, am now the delighted owner of the Morven, Langskip & another bottle of Northland. Aurora next on the list. Beautiful scotch whiskeys from a relatively young distillery who tick every box from product, to marketing to service and customer satisfaction. A wonderful distillery deserving of 5 stars.

Great tour of a great little distillery. Very good tour guide and a relaxed atmosphere the full tour. Recommended if nearby Thurso and a non rushed whisky tasting at the end adds to it
