The whole process was easy, we did it all from home. The Paralegal that came out to see us was very knowledgable and highlighted things we hadn’t thought about.

I made a mistake on my will and rang for advice my will had already been stored and they pulled it from storage to rectify the mistake immediately. I have always found Wills and Legal Services Ltd very efficient and helpful. I would recommend them.

We would strongly advise against using Wills & Legal Services Limited. We responded to their Air Ambulance charity wills promotion. Along with the wills, the WLS paralegal persuaded us to purchase their ‘family trust’ (a discretionary trust). He misled us by falsely claiming that ‘Residential Nil Rate Band’ inheritance tax allowance was unaffected. Due to our concerns with his advice, we requested a refund which was ignored along with all other communications. Trading Standards could not help due to lack of legal expertise. WLS only refunded us when faced with the small claims court. Anyone can call themselves a paralegal in the UK without any qualifications or competence. Preparing these trusts is a reserved legal activity which must only be carried out by SRA regulated solicitors.

EDIT: Thank you for your prompt response. We are not legal experts as you claim to be so our decision to purchase the trust at the time was based on what we now firmly believe to be deliberately misleading advice from your ‘paralegal’. I would ask you to state here on a public forum if you still stand by your repeated claim that putting a property in your ‘family trust’ does not result in a loss of the residence nil rate band inheritance tax allowance for the estate. To clarify, it was us that approached Trading Standards ‘Buy with Confidence’ (where WLS currently has a rating of less than 1 star) as you had consistently ignored all our attempts to communicate before we got them involved. They were unable to help due to their lack of legal knowledge concerning trusts and your refusal to accept any fault. You were apparently less willing to defend your claims in court. We would also like to point out that if you are sub-contracting these trusts to an external solicitor then any SRA regulation does not apply to a WLS customer as a third party, so there is no legal protection in the event of any problems (like your children having to pay over £100K extra in inheritance tax because the property is in a discretionary trust and is therefore not directly inherited).

EDIT 2: Thank you for the suggestion that your clients are encouraged to seek independent legal and tax advice before proceeding, although in our case your paralegal appeared quite happy to sell us the trust at the initial meeting for the wills. We recommend prospective clients search online for ‘worthless family trusts’ as a starting point. We also now consider this matter closed.

The paralegal that completed the documentation was very informed on all matters. They explained everything thoroughly to ensure we understood everything. Once forms were completed everything came through in a timely manner with no issues.

The person who came to our home provably didnt mean to but came over as intimidating. She made her points very forcefully. When the draft wills arrived our surname was spelt incorrectly 3 different ways throughout the document. This was corrected but didnt instal me with much confidence.
