A Truly Special School – Nurturing, Inspiring, and Deeply Rooted in Nature

We feel incredibly fortunate to be long-standing members of the Wharfedale Montessori School community, based in the stunning location of Strid Wood at Bolton Abbey. This school has been a cornerstone in our children’s lives—not just in terms of academic education, but in how it nurtures them as whole individuals.

What initially drew us to Wharfedale was its approach: a school that doesn’t revolve around SATs or rigid benchmarks, but one that sees each child as unique. Children are given the time and support they need to fully understand each topic before moving forward, which creates solid foundations for a lifetime of learning.

Both our children have flourished here. Their education is led by their interests, often through project work that encourages independent thinking, research, collaboration, and creativity. We've seen our children grow not just academically, but as thoughtful, curious individuals who inspire—and are inspired by—their peers.

The natural surroundings play a key role. Being immersed in nature every day has fostered a deep appreciation and respect for the environment. This isn’t just about academics; it’s about raising compassionate, aware, and responsible citizens.

The school also encourages social responsibility. From organising Macmillan coffee mornings to participating in Centrepoint's Big Sleep Out, children are given real, tangible ways to understand and support wider community causes.

Learning is regularly brought to life through rich experiences—trips to Parliament, Beamish Museum, a local farm, and even student-led Makers Markets where the children design and sell their own creations. These moments spark curiosity, build real-world skills, and open up countless conversations and questions.

We’ve had the privilege of experiencing both the early years (Children’s House) and primary provision (Cabin), and we’ve seen our children thrive in both. They have built strong, respectful relationships with the teaching staff and a network of friendships we hope will last into adulthood.

When we first chose a Montessori education, some friends and family were curious about how it would work without the traditional structure they were familiar with. In reality, Wharfedale does follow the national curriculum—but what sets it apart is the way it's delivered. Each child progresses at their own pace, ensuring they fully grasp concepts before moving on. This approach has helped our children build strong foundations whilst also nurturing their individual interests and confidence.

The school offers termly observation sessions, allowing us to witness first-hand the incredible work our children are doing. One standout example is their cooking project: planning a dish, calculating quantities for every child, shopping for ingredients, cooking, surveying feedback, and analysing cost per head. It’s meaningful, practical, and educational all at once.

Most recently, our son’s interest in model building was encouraged when the principal herself brought in a half-finished model for him to complete as part of a wider diorama project. These personal touches mean the world.

Community meetings are another powerful aspect of the school. They help build confidence, empathy, and a culture of mutual respect—teaching children how to express opinions thoughtfully and listen to others.

Wharfedale Montessori is more than a school. It’s a community. It’s a place where children are seen, heard, and empowered to be their best selves—not just now, but for the future.

We can’t recommend it highly enough.

Truly Nurturing and Inspiring School

Both of our children are incredibly fortunate to be part of this school community. It’s a place where they’re free to learn at their own pace, follow their interests, and spend plenty of time outdoors, all within a warm, nurturing environment that truly supports their individual growth.

From cooking and gardening to drawing, exploring the estate, and going on inspiring trips, like visiting a local farm or a Buddhist temple, the experiences they’re having are joyful, enriching, and genuinely memorable.

They both look forward to going to school each day and are genuinely disappointed when it’s the holidays! The teaching team is kind, responsive, and consistently attentive to their unique needs.

The headteacher, Jeremy, is approachable and friendly, and his presence in the classroom is something our children really value.

The school also places great emphasis on personal and social development. Our children are learning to reflect on their behaviour and take responsibility for their actions, life skills that will benefit them far beyond the classroom. It's the kind of thoughtful maturity that many adults could learn from, too.

Wharfedale Montessori Review - DREADFUL, AVOID, BEWARE

My kids had attended Wharfedale Montessori School since nursery, my wife and I believed in the ethos they put forward and felt that it would offer our children the best framework for them to learn. Once the children joined the primary school progressively the quality of teaching and overall leadership got worse and worse. A constant flow of staff leaving, an average of 2/3 children leaving per term due to unresolved issues or grievances and a complete inability to work with children with learning difficulties, the harsh reality is this school is completely out of its depth in the modern world of education and teaching. The owners of the school are confusingly involved, not involved and the quality of leadership from the new head, Jeremy is dreadful at best. Personally my children have left the school and we have subsequently been told by their new school and independent education professsionals they are at least 2 to 3 years behind children of the same age (maths/english) and they have a steep learning curve to get into high school next year. PLEASE TAKE NOTICE, THIS SCHOOL IS FAILING IN EVERY MANNER, take a look at the latest Ofsted Report that reflects my point of view. Do not send your children into a circumstance where the leadership is poor, the education is dreadful and quite simply there is a complete inability to care for the children.

PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN HERE Appalling school

Appalling school, not really worthy of being called a school. Only interested in money and their own superficial egos, not in the children, shouted and screamed at my child in his face despite his severe SEND, denied a complaint. WORSE than mainstream without a shadow of a doubt. DO NOT send your children here.
