I recently approached local businesses asking if they'd support an initiative within my prison. To reduce the impact of crime within society I first need to see what works. I had a small group of socially isolated men with great artistic talents. I challenged them to help me raise money for Care After Combat and a Families Support charity (PACT). We organised the first ever prison art show designed to raise awareness of talent inside and auction off artwork raising money for the charities. Charlie Wheatley-Smith was the only business link to offer support, being an ex-officer she was able to appreciate the lack of investment in reducing reoffending. She came to the show, met with my veterans and other prisoners then bid on some paintings which were later donated back to the children's play area.
Charlie, plus the Justice Museum, Lace Market Theatre, High Sheriff cadet and other volunteers helped me provide a unique atmosphere to a small group of men who'd never had this type of exposure.
