Disappointing and discriminatory
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to formally complain about the inadequate and outdated level of mental health coverage provided under the Unum Health Plan 360.
My recent claim for counselling and psychotherapy was declined after an unreasonably long review process, on the basis that such support is not covered. This is, frankly, unacceptable.
In 2026, excluding access to counselling and psychotherapy from a health plan demonstrates a fundamental failure to recognise mental health as an essential part of medical care. This omission significantly undermines the value and credibility of the policy.
The provision of online-only support does not address this gap. Psychological care is not a one-size-fits-all service, and restricting individuals to limited, pre-approved or remote options shows a clear disregard for patient autonomy and clinical reality.
This approach is not only disappointing but reflects poorly on your organisation’s commitment to meaningful healthcare provision. It raises serious questions about whether this policy meets reasonable expectations for modern health insurance.
I expect a clear explanation for this exclusion, and I would urge you to confirm whether there are any plans to bring your mental health coverage in line with current standards.

UNUM happily take people's money, but when it comes to paying out for illness they are nowhere to be seen. A 2024 court case found that UNUM deny claims with "Fraud and Malice". Just about says it all for this bunch of fraudsters. They paid agents to follow me and my family around, take pictures, film videos, make nuisance telephone calls and even break into our car to view private mail. Steer clear!
Horrible
Horrible! When I tried to return the lashes that weren't applicable they went back n forth for a week about giving me half my money back and I still didn't get anything back! Beware the scam!

I would give 0 stars if it would allow me to. Horrible communication I get a different response every time I call, recording says additional info needed and I uploaded 152 pages of medical records and the Dr office faxed them, now I’m told the request is closed out. Almost an entire month with zero pay and zero light at the end of the tunnel. Beyond frustrating, this company should be shut down for unfair practices as well as unethical.
Outsourced Call Center
I am sorry but when you hire someone to handle something as sensitive as disability claims I would think being able to understand and ask questions is the top priority. It is very obvious that Unum has outsourced their call center to India. This is not some online parts order that you are asking about. This is your livelyhood and you need accurate information and being able to communicate properly is imperative. Every single time I have got and agent on Unum it has been a nightmare. I am not talking about a simple accent. I understand not everyone talks the same. I mean I asked the same question 3 times and she could not understand it. Nor I understand her. Unum has been sued in the past for denying real claims. Not a trustworthy company.

Can't understand the operators when finally get one on the phone, then they tell me to just wait. Even though the automated system says I'm missing files and info, they can't help. Absolute waste of time and stress. Oh, and mobile app doesn't work, operator says they know and plan on working on it...

Less than zero. Have to fight for every claim to be paid to my dental provider. Pathetic. I had no choice as it was assigned by Cobra administrator from my former employer.

You’re better off dead than getting Insurance from Unum.
Can I rate it less than 1 star? I signed up for a whole life policy through an employer where I had automatic paycheck deductions. When I left the employer, I got no notice from Unum on what to do. I also forgot about it. About 18 months after I left, I found a statement which led me to call them Where an employee told me they did not contact me about making payments on the policy, but they should’ve and there’s nothing I can do about it now. Frustrated I left it there. I filed a complaint with the Alabama insurance commission and Better Business Bureau. A couple years later I called back where they denied what that rep had told me, but also would not allow access to that recorded phone call. They also said they mailed a letter out to my parents house where I regularly checked my mail, but it never came. Doing that call they kept saying there’s nothing they can do and they will do what they can to help me, but they can’t do anything. I complained to the Alabama insurance commission again and their responses they follow their policies so there’s nothing that they can do. Did they make it safely? Unum gaslit me and denied what their representative told me in 2014 but then also refuse to provide the recorded phone calls that would prove what I was saying.
Poor customer service
Unum dental is the worst service I have ever had from a company to whom I have been a loyal customer for over ten years. All they do is give you the runaround, even if you are trying to give them more business. Neither do they respond to paying claims even when you have filled in all the forms and provided the receipts. All they are interested in is winning big corporate accounts. Their customer service after that is beyond poor.

I had major neck surgery in December 2024, and am still having issues with my neck and shoulder, my long term disability claim has been pending since may 5th, 2025. I've not gotten paid, and have not been cleared to work. They keep forcing work restrictions and functional capacity evaluations on my doctors which costs $1200.

They’re just so bad and all about corporate profits, clearly. They deny and give you the runaround during stressful and likely financially difficult times due to needing the leave in the first place. These people who work there must know what they put people through, they just do not care because it hasn’t happened to them. I sincerely hope they all get the days they deserve.
The “disagree” with your doctors and then pick and choose things from your files and spin them into some random, self contradicting pile of BS and pat themselves on the back. You pay into it. They’re stealing from you. I’m down for another round of Unum class action lawsuits.

I’m very disappointed with my recent experience with UNUM. I was told by Agent Kimbirlie that documents from my employer were still pending, even though my employer confirmed they had submitted everything over a week ago. When I raised this issue, the agent was dismissive and unhelpful, making me feel ignored during an already stressful situation.
I’m currently going through a family emergency, and the last thing I should have to worry about is whether I’ll be paid in time to cover my bills. The lack of urgency, empathy, and clear communication has caused unnecessary financial and emotional strain.
I expected better support from a company that handles disability and income protection. I hope UNUM improves their responsiveness and shows more compassion to people going through difficult times.
