In my experience, they use the Rule of 78 method of calculating interest, which I found to be extremely deceptive and unfair and has been banned in many states.

Here’s what happened to me: I paid off my loan early. By the time my payment arrived, the payoff balance had increased by about $20. I assumed that if I waited until my next payment date to pay that remaining $20, the interest would only amount to a few cents. Instead, I was shocked to discover that nearly $200 was due the following month because interest continued to accrue under the Rule of 78 calculation, which applied interest accrual on a much higher balance of approx $4,000 even though my payoff was only $20. Until your loan is paid in full, the “balance” can be thousands higher than your payoff. Seeing approximately $175 in interest added when only $20 remained to pay was something I found both illogical and incredibly unfair.

What made the experience even worse was the district manager’s attitude. Rather than listening to my concerns or explaining the calculation professionally, he repeatedly insisted that I “didn’t understand.” I understood exactly how they were applying the calculation—I simply believe it’s an unethical way to treat customers.

Consumers should read the loan agreement very carefully and fully understand how interest and payoff amounts are calculated before signing. In my opinion, this lending practice is confusing, misleading, and predatory. I hope Texas eventually prohibits this type of loan calculation so other consumers don’t have the same experience.
