A 5/5 yoga and meditation experience

This review is for the March 2026 retreat in Ishigaki, Okinawa.

Overall, I would rate the experience a 5/5. Misha and his team at Tokyo Mindfulness went above and beyond to create a really special, curated experience.

The pros:
1) excellent group size - all in, our group of 8 was the perfect size. It allowed for meaningful 1-on-1 sessions whilst allowing us personal space.
2) location - the Ishigaki retreat home was centrally located, 2 mins from the beach. It really created a peaceful environment, was comfortable, well-stocked, clean, and had plenty of authentic Japanese charm
3) yoga - our yoga leader was knowledgeable and adjusted well to our different skill levels
4) food - Tokyo Mindfulness arranged for a private chef to cook fresh meals every day, using local produce. Many of the dishes were Okinawan-inspired and were delicious and healthy
5) flexibility - even though Misha arranged for activities each day, he was able to work around weather changes and adjusted the schedules accordingly. He also set up plenty of personal time for reflection which allowed each of us to choose what do in between yoga and meditation
6) meditation - Misha created a really open space for self-reflection and quiet time. He implemented different methods of meditation, which allowed each of us to find what worked best.

The cons:
None. The only “con” I can think of was that the weather was unexpectedly unpredictable. However, Misha adjusted the schedules well enough that we still were able to do all our planned activities.

Overall, I had a really special time and met some really special people. I would definitely do another retreat with Tokyo Mindfulness.

Excellent

The Nikko retreat was wonderful thanks to all the hard work Misha put into organizing and his fantastic guidance and presence. He is truly offering something valuable and greatly needed to the English-language community in Japan. I highly recommend attending his events and I'm looking forward to the next one!

Okinawa

The retreat in Okinawa (Ishigaki Island) was my first-ever retreat experience , and it came at a time when I really needed to get away from my hectic life in Tokyo. Shiraho village is peaceful, with enough local cafes and restaurants to explore during downtime. The retreat center was just minutes from the beach, and it was a perfect blend of traditional Japanese design beautifully adapted to the tropical surroundings. The weather wasn’t great for most of the retreat, but the setting was so serene that I didn’t mind staying indoors to meditate, journal, or go to one of the cozy nearby cafes or restaurants. I’d even say the rain added to the magic and gave my inner work and contemplations more depth. Luckily, the weather was great on the day we went snorkeling (I highly recommend the snorkeling tour - the coral reef in Shiraho is absolutely stunning!!! )

Morning yoga was really grounding, even though I don’t usually practice much yoga. Each session was thoughtfully adjusted to match the theme of the day. There was something about the setting, the themes, and the gentle movement that brought unexpected clarity, allowing me to see some past life events from a new perspective.The daily meditations were varied in style and let me connect with myself in different ways. Some meditations let me get in touch with my creativity, some were more reflective, some deeply relaxing, and some gently challenged me to sit with emotions or thoughts I tend to avoid. Misha is an excellent meditation guide: super helpful, knowledgeable, compassionate, and patient. I came back to Tokyo feeling grounded, and ready to go back to my busy life.

Last but not least, the food was amazing! ! Dinner was catered by local chefs and I looked forward to fresh Okinawa dishes every day.

I’ve also attended a few other events and workshops with Tokyo Mindfulness and each experience has been wonderful. I highly recommend attending an event with them if you’re in Tokyo! The community has been integral to my mental and spiritual well-being here.

Amazing mindfulness community in Tokyo

I feel very fortunate to have found this space in Tokyo ! Misha is a great mindfulness teacher, and attending his group meditation sessions, mindful hikes, and retreats has been crucial for my wellbeing and overall life in Japan.

Misha is extremely knowledgeable about meditation, the traditional aspects of it as well as the more modern and scientific understanding of these practices. I highly recommend it if you are looking for an English-speaking mindfulness community in Tokyo !

A patient guide

Misha is a caring, understanding and patient guide to inner peace. His guided mediations worked incredibly well for me and I would describe some of them as life changing.

Embracing vulnerability and learning new tools to grow

I joined the Retreat of March 2025. The host since the first moment was very open and providing a positive vibe to the participants so we could feel comfortable while being part of the experience. This has been my first retreat and my first touch to Buddhist concepts and I can say it has been a very good experience of learning new tools and realizing things I was missing about myself. This has been a great opportunity to create meaningful conversation with others as well, while being vulnerable and feeling comfortable with it. I’ll keep practicing the techniques we learned from now on.

Retreat Experience

I had a one day short retreat to Yamanashi with intimate group, leaded by Misha in March 2025. The whole experience has been filled with positive energy and learning different things from each meditation session. I am trying to find happiness back in my life and this retreat helps me in someway to right back on track. I would join another retreats if I have a chance. Highly recommend. Tools to help with overthinking (2 day retreat)

2 day meditation retreat at a beautiful temple complex tucked away in the mountains of Yamanashi.

Despite the short time, I felt I made significant progress in my practice.

We covered a broad range of meditation techniques and talked through which ones worked best for us.

Misha has a wealth of experience and knowledge, yet an approachable and humble demeanor, which allowed me to open up and gain a deeper understanding of myself.

After the retreat I feel more centered, more connected, and more confident that I have a bunch of new tools to help me with overthinking in my daily life.

Highly recommend this (or any) experience run by Misha.

Great retreat for travelers or those living in Tokyo area - uniquely Japan

I was solo-traveling in Japan from the U.S. and looking for unique experiences that would support my overall wellbeing and came across Tokyo Mindfulness's Yamanashi meditation 2-days retreat.

Misha, the retreat leader, and the community from all over the world were very welcoming. All the logistics were taken care of, so the focus could really be on myself. The location was great, with a temple stay in the mountains out of the city and visits to sites and experiences with cultural and religious significance that are uniquely Japan incorporated, which was particularly attractive to me. While many of the meditation practices could be and are done anywhere in the world, the overall experience also included pieces that could only be offered in Japan.

The meditations were guided in a way that beginners to those who have practiced for a while all would be able to benefit. While there is a specific theme, the range is broad, and I appreciated Misha's ability to make it all seem simple, while paying attention to the subtleties. The retreat was a great opportunity to be in community while honoring my own space. I felt a sense of deeper connection within and with oneness, an appreciation of the Japanese elements built in, and more clarity and empowerment to continue my journey.

For English-speakers in Tokyo area or those visiting/working and passing through looking for practices and support to build or deepen your meditation practice or try something to support your wellbeing, I'd recommend checking out Tokyo Mindfulness.
