Tohatsu makes a great motor but I would not buy one again. Service is hard to get and all parts are hard to get. A filter is hard to get but if you need a map sensor or like part it takes months to get it because they are on back order . I have a 2018 20 hp 4 stroke and I have been waiting months for a map sensor n it is on back order everywhere. It is bull crap

I purchased a new Tohatsu BFT250D outboard motor in 2020 that included a 5 year warranty. Recently, a hole developed in the engine block, due to corrosion. Tohatsu America Corporation (TAC) acknowledges that their warranty is in effect but TAC says that their warranty doesn't cover corrosion (and I have been in contact with TAC regarding this matter). However, in TAC's online (PDF) document "Limited Warranty Information" the only time that the word "Corrosion" appears is in the paragraph titled : NORMAL COSMETIC DETERIORATION. If a hole in the engine block is considered "Normal" then that puts into question the reliability of Tohatsu's products and the value of their warranty.

I bought two new 250 HP engines this March and the service could not be worse. The 4.3 toes gauges do not work and the company does not help.

I have a Tohatsu TLDI 50 from 2004, on a RIB in Denmark. It has been sailing between 30-60 hours each year. Taking very good care of boat and engine, all services are met and it have been placed in indoor dry conditions every winter.
Last summer the fuel pump stopped on a vacation i Lake Garda. I used most of two days looking for a pump, but all retailers laughed at me and joked about Tohatsu`s deliveriy time - delivery is over one month from the day i was in the shop, if i was lucky. No body recomended Tohatsu because of the spare part delevery or prices. Try other brands in the future they said. Fuel was hand pumped the rest of the vacation..

This summer the engine suddently stopped, first time in the water, no movement, the engine was dead. I took it to a Tohatsu dealer.
He looked at the engine and said there is no light indications or failure that he could meassure, so he started from one end.
It is not a problem that it needs repair or service but the price of the spare parts is outrageous.
I needed to have the compressor unit replaced and some O-rings - 1.870 Euro in parts and 4 weeks of delivery time. The fuel and air nozzles were cleaned but they also need to be changed after one more stop in the water.
New fuel and air nozzles 3 of each - 1.640 Euro. Total in parts witout salary of the Tohatsu dealer - 3.510 Euro, almost half price of a new engine - a total rip off.
A new TLDI 50 engine costs 7.25o Euro.

Before you invest in a boat engine, that is an expensive toy, have a look at the spare part prices first - not the most expensive ones like Tohatsu. It will cost you in the end..
