Dodgy tradesman
I used the website service.com.au to put out a fencing job request. H&M Landscape and Gardens, run by Hayden William Rixon (ABN: 24522620201), responded to the request.
I made the error of telling him I was abroad and, claiming insecurity, he demanded an upfront payment of $14,500 to go ahead with the job. Having spent weeks searching for alternative tradesmen, I reluctantly agreed and made the payment.
He later dumped fencing materials on the property and never built the fence.
The OFT took the matter to court on 8th December 2025 and convicted him of a breach of consumer law. Prior this, service.com.au did next to nothing, claiming to have tried to contact the tradesman but nothing else.
The reason I hold service.com.au partially responsible is that it had given me the impression that this tradesman had been vetted, what with the 3 green ticks next to his name. It was very obvious that nobody had ever vetted this guy, who not only had made numerous criminal court appearances, but didn't even have a building license.

They did not hold full verification status, and no green verification ticks were displayed to indicate vetting or endorsement. Verification on our platform is not a guarantee of licensing, qualifications, or conduct, and we always recommend customers independently confirm licences, insurance, and avoid large upfront payments.
Once we became aware of the concerns raised, the business was removed from our platform. We take reports of this nature very seriously and act promptly when issues are identified.
While we are unable to investigate or resolve disputes between customers and independent businesses, we do appreciate you bringing this to our attention. If you would like to discuss this further, please contact our support team directly so we can review your account and provide any assistance available from our side.

Great Service all Round!
The site was easy to use and set up. Timely notifications were received and it was easy to communicate with prospective contractors. Post service check up was undertaken by the customer service team, who were always helpful and polite.

Joe's Mows and Concreting…
Joseph from Joe's Mows and Concreting was very good and thorough in completing a site inspection before quoting the job, checking for site access and desired position of the garden shed slab.
Due to rain/weather delay, Joseph rescheduled the job and arrived punctually on the new day, promptly starting preparation works. Upon completion all equipment was removed and the site cleaned, leaving us with a wonderful new slab for our new garden shed.
