Failed to complete fundamental survey work and did not complete work paid for
The manner in which this company conducts their business is nothing short of criminal... avoid at all costs!!!
The architectural site for my proposed project exists on a complex site and yet Porthouse Dean have determined that it was not necessary to complete appropriate survey to carry out their works. The result of this, two years into the project, is that everything proposed is not viable owing to the landscape and proximity of trees... all of which could have been determined had sufficient survey been conducted in the first place. A clear breech of professional standards and protocol they are supposed to abide by and yet no remorse has been shown, no accountability taken and certainly no positive action to correct what is their oversight.
Speaking of oversight, repeatedly they have overlooked the scope of work they were instructed and paid to complete. Whole structural sections of the project remain unplanned, yet fully paid for, again with no accountability taken for the oversight.
Please please avoid this company. Communication is dreadful, rude, arrogant and lacks any decent professionalism. Please do not make the same mistake I did and instruct their services. You are better to instruct a child to draw a picture with crayons to detail the structural work of your project... it would certainly hold much more value and is likely to be more accurate than what Porthouse Dean have provided to me

Steve, we're sorry the project has been frustrating.
Our appointment was to provide the structural calculations and drawings supplementary to your Building Regulations application, and those were completed and issued. External garden retaining walls fall outside that scope, so neither wall formed part of the work we were engaged to do. We designed one of them within the existing fee regardless, at no additional charge.
We have heard nothing to suggest building control has raised any issue with the designs we produced, and no technical defect in them has been identified. If anything is raised, please come back to us and we'll keep working on it at no further cost until building control is satisfied, as our terms provide.
We've stayed engaged with you and with Resi throughout, including two video consultations and detailed written correspondence, and our director — a Chartered Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers — has handled this personally.

Really good engineers. Ive used Porthousedean engineers for many of our clients and my personal project. I find there pricing fair to reflect the quality work that has been produced. Definitely recommend and i do recommend them.

[Edit following response from PorthouseDean: I appreciate the follow up from Sam. I understand their process as described, but it was made clear in our initial consultation that we were going to get the information before proceeding so none of that applies in this case. They should (and still can) have rectified their mistake and completed the drawings/calculations to spec]
Dealing with PorthouseDean has been frustrating. They began work without waiting for all agreed-upon information, then refused to correct their mistake without using the '1 free change' included in the price.
As we're still in the early stages of the project, I wasn't happy at using the free change for this purpose, so they have caveated their work with something like 'This steel beam is not required if a contractor confirms x, y, z' instead of updating the drawings/calculations.
I thought that engaging a structural engineer would mean that our builders wouldn't be the ones making these decisions.
I will update this review if we need to go back to PhD to our free change.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, and I’m sorry that your experience so far hasn’t matched your expectations. That’s never what we want for any of our clients.
When we produced the original structural design, we hadn’t yet received confirmation on whether the internal wall was load-bearing, so we designed a steel beam based on the drawings and information available at the time. In many domestic projects, confirming whether a wall is truly load-bearing requires intrusive investigation (for example, stripping back finishes and exposing structure), which is usually carried out by the contractor during the strip-out stage using their tools. Because of this, it’s quite normal industry practice to design cautiously at first and then simplify the design once the contractor has confirmed the actual site conditions.
After our calculations and drawings had been completed and issued to your architect, further site information suggested the wall might in fact be non-load-bearing and that the beam might not be required.
In situations like this, our usual process is to make any revisions through the complimentary “change request” included in the service. To clarify, this doesn’t mean you are limited to only one change overall – it’s one round of revisions, and that round can include multiple updates made at the same time.
To avoid delaying your project while the wall is checked on site, we suggested (by email) that your contractor investigate on site and that your architect add an engineering note to the Building Regulation drawings stating that the beam is not required if site verification confirms the wall is non-load-bearing. This allows work to proceed safely and in line with Building Regulations, while still leaving your complimentary change request available for any final updates once the on-site position is clear.
I’m sorry if this approach and the options weren’t clearly explained and it felt like we were unwilling to revise our work. That was not our intention.
If you’d like to pick this back up, we’d be very happy to help: once on-site checks confirm the wall isn’t load-bearing, we can formally update and reissue the structural drawings and calculations without the beam under your complimentary change request so everything fully reflects the final site conditions.
