Refused to give refund for $300 fake Dyson even with proof

Offerup claims to offer a 2-day refund policy if an item is shipped and has issues. I bought a Dyson Airwrap and had it shipped, and it arrived at 11am on Monday. I had work on Monday and Tuesday, but Wednesday morning I was able to go to the Dyson store and get proof that it was fake. I submitted a refund request at 12pm but since it had been 49 hours they told me to kick rocks, and they just happily gave my money to a scammer with no way to get it back except asking the scammer really nicely. Nowhere on their website did they say that the refund policy was EXACTLY 48 hours, and it's crazy that they won't help you AT ALL if you tell them even an hour too late that they sold you a piece of junk.

I was banned by offer up for violating their terms of service without ever trying to buy or sell anything and their customer service department appears to simply be an illusion. Worst app ever. Facebook marketplace is soooo much better.

While we do have paid options to promote listings, most people sell without spending a dime. Adding detailed photos, an accurate description, and fair pricing really helps your items stand out. Plus, quick responses go a long way to keep buyers interested and build up your profile as a trusted seller.

If an item isn’t moving, sometimes refreshing it with new photos or updating the details does the trick. Little adjustments can make all the difference!

A Once-Great Marketplace Ruined by Ads, Glitches, and Scams

Emma, I appreciate the response (NOT REALLY), but it only solidifies why I’m moving on from OfferUp. Ads are a necessary part of free apps, but they shouldn’t make using the app unbearable. Suggesting a subscription to avoid disruptions feels out of touch, especially when these issues weren’t so problematic before the merger with Letgo. The frequent glitches with posting, editing, and even basic functionality are only magnified by these ads. As for reviews, whether they're disabled or not, the inflated rating is misleading given how much OfferUp has changed. At this point, even well-meaning responses like yours come off as dismissive rather than helpful.

I used to love OfferUp, but it’s time to move on. Since merging with Letgo, this app has been on a steep decline. The ad overload is unbearable—not just simple banners, but pop-up ads that completely interrupt the user experience. I'm all for ads to support a product, but OfferUp has gone too far. Even basic searches are now filled with irrelevant results, similar to Letgo's past issues.

Posting and editing listings is hit-or-miss. Sometimes it lets me edit, sometimes it doesn't. And photo uploads? Good luck—it can take half an hour just to post one item because of constant glitches. Add to that the rampant scams and fake listings that go unchecked, and it's just not worth the hassle anymore.

What’s most frustrating? They’ve disabled reviews on Google Play, so that inflated 4.4-star rating is incredibly misleading. It's as if they know the app is failing and want to hide it. OfferUp had so much potential, but without major improvements, it’s just become an annoying, unreliable mess.

Free or don’t post here. This is not a buying place.

It’s not for sellers for sure. I post something and you better be sure you want to get rid of it. OfferUp does not post well for sellers just free stuff. And when it’s free people think they do have the right to it and actually get upset if someone else took it! Despite being free. But you put a price tag and no one wants it. It’s the worse place to sell. I’ve been a member and sold a few for les than $50 for something that’s with $500 just to get rid of something. Better of Craigslist there’s actually good buyers here. OfferUp just does not do justice unless you want to give away.

OfferUp really is proving to be the worst app. I have never had issues with this app until recently. I think I am being punished for filing a complaint with BBB Because my account was deactivated without me violating any guidelines.

Disappointing Customer Support and Unjust Account Deactivation

I’ve been using OfferUp for my business, “I.G @ Hair Haven SF,” where I sell beauty products, mainly wigs. Recently, my experience with OfferUp has been nothing short of frustrating recently.

First, I encountered glitches where multiple customers placed orders, but I never received shipping labels or notifications. After contacting customer support during business hours, I didn’t get a response until much later with a generic message. I was informed that my orders totaling $429 had been canceled and was told to ask the buyers to repurchase, which was supposed to fix the issue. It didn’t work and no time frame was given.

I reported the issue several times, only to receive the same responses. Eventually, I was told OfferUp was aware of the problem and working on it, but no timeline was given. After filing a complaint with the BBB, I received a response claiming the issue had been fixed. Unfortunately, a friend who tried to reorder couldn’t even find my account after her order was canceled.

To make matters worse, I then received an email stating that my account was permanently deactivated for violating community guidelines—without specifying which guideline I supposedly violated. Prior to deactivation, I had a pending balance of $213, which I haven’t received, and no clear explanation of what went wrong.

I’m incredibly disappointed with the lack of transparency, the delayed responses, and the negative impact this has had on my business. I hope OfferUp addresses these serious issues to avoid further inconvenience to their sellers because just because I filed a complaint doesn't mean my account should be deleted.
UPDATE

I was in contact with multiple members of their escalation team and my account was reinstated. I had to relist all my items again but I accept this apology and steps taken

Useless search results, too many scam sellers

Despite a TOS stating the contrary, site allows sellers to "game" the system by posting multiple duplicate items in different cities. When asked, these sellers will give a completely different city than what they posted in. It's such a widespread problem that trying to search for an item within a 10 mile radius is pointless, as the search will be cluttered by items that are NOT in your area.
The other major problem is retailers that post a price, but when you go there they claim that was only the down payment. Again, a violation of the TOS, but good luck getting OfferUp to ever enforce it.
The report button is apparently just for show. It makes Craigslist seem more reliable by comparison. What an utterly frustrating experience.

One of the worst companies i have ever…

One of the worst companies i have ever had to deal with so many spam fake buyers , no effort was made to police this. Then they use priority mail, which in addition to being constantly late has the real possibility of being lost. Not a great system for selling anything as the buyer retains all of the leverage, i shipped a new unopened item yet the buyer can sit on his hands for 2 days to basically find a way not to pay for the item. The company is not interested in taking any feedback and has no interest in making anything any better. In addition the charge huge fees for basically providing a priority mail shipping label which is most likely bought in bulk at a fraction of the going rate. No real option to talk with a person , so A.I. generated responses that don’t even address any of your concerns is what you get. Never again

Not a trust worthy company

Not a trust worthy company. I paid $19.99 to promote an ad on offer up. One week ago offer up deleted my ad saying it was prohibited. A week later they billed me $19.99 to promote the ad they deleted for another month. I contacted customer service which gave me the run around prior to telling me they would not refund me for the service they billed me for but have not provided.

Free trial scam???

Incredibly frustrating experience. I recently signed up for an offerup subscription because they offered a free trial on the front end. The app kept freezing when I went to create listings, and it is not possible to create listings using a desktop web browser, so I wanted to cancel the subscription before the trial period was over. I couldn't find any way to do so via the app so I contacted them. I got a response that the month subscription was charged ($19.99) and there would be no refund (!). I reached out again to stress that I had clicked on the option with a free trial, so there should be a refund, but have not heard back yet. This is a HORRIBLE way to treat customers and I plan on filing a complaint with BBB if it's not resolved.

Response to OfferUp: The problem is that it wasn't actually set up as a free trial. Looking over it all again, the $19.99 charge was immediate and the iPhone app subscriptions section only gave me the option of requesting a refund and/or cancelling the subscription to prevent FUTURE charges rather than reversing the initial charge -- which shouldn't have been charged in the first place because it was supposed to be a free trial! At the time I did try requesting a refund via Apple but it was denied. And as stated before, there was no way to do anything via the OfferUp app or site. If OfferUp is advertising a free trial, they are responsible for not charging the customer until the free trial period is over and for making it possible to cancel the subscription within the free trial timeframe to avoid being charged. I repeat: there was no way to do so via Apple or OfferUp and there was no assistance when I reached out communicating as much -- before the trial period was over! If OfferUp was operating in good faith, they would refund the subscription charge in cases like these. It's painfully straightforward. Refusal to rectify situations like this constitutes terrible customer service. My original complaint holds.

NO service on paid promotion

I bought a promotion for an ad placed on Offer Up. They charged me $19.99, but I couldn't use the promotion. I was told to contact Apple, but they referred me back to Offer Up. I couldn't get customer service to resolve the issue, and they kept sending me form letter emails with no real information or useless links. I verified payment through my bank, and Offer Up "support" kept saying they could do nothing. They also refused to tell me where the money went and won't promote the item. So basically, they were paid to do nothing. I filed a complaint with the BBB....also Offer Up said I needed to cancel the promotion through the app, which said it was purchased, but I still couldn't use it. The absolute worst customer service I have ever had.

You MUST Turn Off VPN Security to Use Offer Up

The major problem I have with OfferUp is that it requires that I turn off my VPN service which I simply will not do. This is stupid on their part because all they have to do if they want to know the users location is to require that once logged in with a VPN that users turn on their locations so that Offer Up can better serve the Buyer's interests. It's the same result without demanding that users give up their VPN

As a local market place, we need true locations to better serve up the items you are searching for and/or local items in your feed. Today you have the 0-30 mile radius - This helps with that. We also take Trust and Safety seriously and we find that some bad actors use VPN to stay anonymous on the platform. This is one way we combate against scams.

Again Milo, I cannot solve the VPN prob but these are the whys. I hope you continue to use OfferUp and i encourage you to keep providing us feedback.

Froud company

I usually only sell local but this time item was sold with shipping. I should get only 10 bucks from this sale but the thing is I didn’t get them !! I wrote to customer help multiple times and they confirm all my bank information is correct but money was still not deposited and they even stopped replying me . I know it’s only 10 bucks but it was really bad experience and I will NEVER ship through offer up again because it looks like offer up just taking people s money!!!!!

I have never heard of anything like this. Why in the world would you charge someone for something that I did last year? did they need my $21 that bad? I know they are not that broke. Plus I do not see that this is written anywhere. I know that I cancel this before the free trial was over and they still charge me?

they had no right going into my account after I cancel this offer. This company fraud...stay away from them..

OFFER UP IS MONEY HUNGRY...I PROMISE THEY ARE SCAMMING

When offer up first started, I was able to sell any and everything with in minutes. Now I've noticed its very hard to sell anything. I posted everything brand new, a 4 in 1 printer, portable air conditioner that cost $600' and a bissel pet vac, that does multiple things. Everything new. i posted it for $300 and i only had 4 views. paid for the 1 day promotion and only got 8 more views. How does it goes from recieving 50 views in a couple minutes, to barely nothing? This site is not posting because they want you to pay $19.99. I promise you, fb Market is better than offer up. Im done with offer up. If i was u i wouldn't waste my time with offer up.
