Good Site, Toxic Owner
The idea for the Mugen Archive is a great one. It's a 'warehouse', a place where all Mugen content is archived, and since a LOT of creator websites have gone down over the years, the concept is not even just good but is downright necessary.
Unfortunately, the owner Dizzy is toxic and deeply mentally ill. He's what psychs call 'malignant paranoid', being completely convinced the rest of the Mugen community is out to get him while ironically being completely out to get the rest of the Mugen community. He has a really weird sense of humor (likened other site owners to Nazis during one holiday) and a sadistic side that likes to torment users of his own site in particular (forces a concept called 'Community Weekend' that is clearly just to mess with MA users, since it doesn't do and never has done what he says it's for). In short, Dizzy is the last person who should ever have power over anything. Unfortunately, he's the person who pays for the site (and is constantly pandering for other users to foot that bill in his place), plus the other site founders like That Man and Sol Badguy have all retired over the years leaving Dizzy in sole control.
If you want a Mugen character, you'll probably have to deal with the Archive, so here's what you do. Make a burner email with Yahoo or preferably Gmail (Dizzy is a Google acolyte, of course). Sign up with that and a fake name with as little identifying info as possible. When the account is approved, use it only to download characters, and only on the weekdays. Avoid the site during the weekends, and avoid the forums completely unless you want your account to get banned by the one-person gestapo that is Dizzy. Make a few posts on uploads if you want a 50 MB+ sized file, and never mention Dizzy's name at all, since he searches it obsessively every hour of every day. And finally, never use the site without some kind of Adblock, since Dizzy is constantly experimenting with ways to harvest user/visitor data and sell it for his own gain.
This is how you can use the Archives safely, without encountering its mentally ill owner.
Schizophrenia
This site somewhat reminds me of the era of WinMUGEN which had the best characters (along with later DOS one) but full of grumpy creators, elitist frat boys and ego-inflated immature forum admins. Just this site doesn´t bash creations and is in self-denial. I have never been banned but some actions are questionable. But otherwise the very best site for getting old characters because since the conflicts of 2009 and new era of cartoon fans without any standards lot of formely famous characters disappeared. Or even earlier. Mugenarchive has to be here to preserve MUGEN history. Just the moderation should be changed.
Worst. Site. Ever!
I was annoyed when i wasn't allowed to download anything because i didn't have permission to access the downloads. I tried to complain, but they just IP banned me! You know what? I hope MUGEN Archive shuts down!
Unacceptable
Unacceptable, can't download anything over 10MB not even allowed to make any new accounts. This site is a disgrace to the Mugen Community. Literally one of if not the worst mugen site ever hands down... Either fix those problems or just shut down the website entirely I'm literally being straightforward with this criticism.
mugenarchive moderation is terrible
mugenarchive in itself is a pretty damn good site, it has to be one of the most convenient and safe spaces for everything mugen. my main issue has to be with the higher-ups like dizzy, the community weekends aren't at all necessary and how they cant take any form of criticism no matter if its a joke or constructive, say the phrase "oh no" to them and you'd probably get ip banned. how they treat other sites are extremely immature and even how they treat regular users, you apparently need to be a high ranking individual to even download files above 50mb or have a higher chance of not being banned for doing nothing. if only the higher-ups see this i would say that trying to force a community by ruling the archive with an iron fist isn't going to work and that they need to try harder in making an actual fun environment to chat about mugen things :(
Don't bother.
After two years of usage I got banned for complaining that they sent me to scam links instead of the raw download. Don't they know that the scams are how the sites pay them and they could end up being liable? The moderators aren't very helpful either, banning people for things like asking for help because their poorly-developed script mistook them for using a download accelerator. I definitely recommend one of the many other MUGEN sites.
MUGEN can do without this existing
If there had to be a toxic side to MUGEN the Archive exists as such in my eyes.
Why they have done what they done and have not got any cease and desists is beyond me, it has been a bad show with premiums offered like a pay-to-win system, moderators that ban on the slightest offence (many friends have come forward mentioning this), and overall the face, Dizzy, is so extremely hated by multiple people it's any wonder how there is justice to what the individual done.
All and all, a site Archived by nothing but donkeys, and until they can prove me wrong, it will remain this way, eternally
It has quite the reputation and I'm fairly certain this is why.
For how gigantic an amount of content it has, the site is ran absolutely quite poorly. I know Discord servers ran by ten years olds that are (or were) ran better than this website is.
Their white knights steal content from anywhere they can find them, and uploads them to MA without asking the original creators at all in the first place, even when the character has a notice of no stealing, and the website just lets that fly under the excuse of "if it's for MUGEN it's free for everyone" (which they themselves don't even apply outside of their small niche of kids and other mentally-challenged people, since they ban both lurkers and people who disagree with them from even downloading anything, thus defeating the very purpose of an "Archive").
They'll go as low as having snitches in other communities and have often been the source of problems in many of the ones I went in. Snitches that went as far as earning people's trust, only to backstab them afterwards by posting their normally private works in MA.
And you can't even appeal their decisions: if you try commenting on how they run the site or even just asking for a friend, you are BANNED ON THE SPOT. This is administration abuse and should be enough ground for laying off the ENTIRE staff of that site.
Plus they use redirection links and IP/URL verification systems just to make money out of normally free content, making it literally illegal as, under normal circumstances, MUGEN content should be free.
If you want characters, go literally anywhere else. I'd go as far as saying even YouTube and Google, despite not specializing in MUGEN at all, are better bets than MUGEN Archive.
Sincerely
- A banned user whose friend also got banned solely for asking for a reason on his behalf.
MugenArchive is a great mugen site, run by absolute children
Where do I even begin with MugenArchive... A week ago, or near that time frame, Mugen Archive did this community thing where they ban "inactive" members from being able to download any Mugen material off of their website. So basically, if you don't conversate with the bland people who actually do comment on the site, you'll have to wait the weekend before you can even download the only thing you're on the site for. They put a list of rules below the post that they said this in, I made sure to pay attention and read the rules carefully, as I have been other people on r/mugen say that they were banned for questioning the system, and then some mugenarchive admins would call them stupid because they "didn't read the rules". So, I made sure to read the rules, then I replied to the post in what I would deem as a very passive and polite way. I don't remember exactly what I said, but it was two sentences, and something along the lines of this:
"I don't really see why you value members being active so much, if so you could have just been a community site instead of a mugen one. Although it is your site and you're free to make the rules, I still feel like there was a better way to solve this, but I can't think of one so you do you."
Something as basic as that, no real maliciousness at all, yet within a few hours, I'd come to find that I had been permanently IP banned from the site. The main rules were basically "No large bodies of text and no hostility or overly complaining or you will be perma banned"
That's it, those were the two big no no rules. Which I'm pretty sure I followed quite well. Yet still, permanently IP banned. So I went on r/mugen which is run by the same people who run mugenarchive because toxicity is bliss I guess. I made a post asking if I could get an explanation about why I was banned off of the site, I posted almost exactly what I have posted here, saying that what I said didn't break any of the rules nor did it even truly disagree with what the post even said, and that i'd just like a reason why I was banned.
Next morning, got on reddit and see that I have a new notification, what I expected was "Oh sorry, here's a ban appeal link" or "You were banned from MugenArchive because you (reason)" or something along those lines. But what I was met with was a notification saying "You have been banned from r/mugen" and that was the official point that I knew that the site was run by children who couldn't take even the slightest bit of criticism. I don't want the site to go down as it is a truly wonderful Mugen site, but the staff can honestly burn in hell.
Run by people who shouldn't be running anything
There is literally nothing good about this site. The fact that the people in charge conned their way into controlling the MUGEN reddit is only the tip of the iceberg to how insanely controlling and fragile they are. Even using the dislike button on posts (or liking posts with even mild criticism) on their forum has them throwing out bans and crying 'drama!'.
And now they're seriously calling anything criticizing them 'fake news' and talking about taking 'legal action against internet criminals'.
Mugen Archive? More like I need attention.
To have a Mugen ARCHIVE and force people to be active in the community when half of us are just here for the content, it's pathetic and laughable at best. Just so ya know MA my user is peskybee and you deactivated my stuff cause I didn't comment or give you guys attention. I have sever social anxiety and even chatting with people online can make me uncomfortable, especially people I don't know anything about. I'll be heading to the wonderful other sites I've found and I'll link them all here for everyone else cause screw you Mugen Archive.
Here is a quote from one of the admins themselves "DIZZY" - "Good, we will support you if you make more of these."
"Overpowered edits are really popular and may be the reason why
MUGEN still exists to this day."
No. Just no. The reason Mugen is so loved is 1. It's free 2. It's made for the community BY the community 3. New Mugen chars are still being created, ported, and edited to this day. 4. You can mix and match any of your favorite games/characters to have epic battles you dreamed of as a kid 5. I KNOW I'm not the only one who hates overpowered characters. If there's no chance for the other fighter we'll think "what's the point if I already know who's gonna win?!
-mugenfreeforall - Has great collections!
-mugenguild - Like I said I have anxiety and don't chat online however in my opinion this community is less toxic and way more friendly just from the posts I've read.
-Infinitymugenteam
The whole donations thing is bs you should be able to donate to a creator you love/support not the website its self cause people can upload there characters on so many other sites. There's really nothing special about MA anymore besides how lazy, broken, and outdated all the characters are.
5 stars for preserving huge number of…
5 stars for preserving huge number of great old characters, from the times there were much more balanced ones. The rules make no sense though, from the limitations of downloading for new members to steps against everyone who is not an elitist sheep. The shadow of the old infamous WinMUGEN era.
the site is good but there is too many…
the site is good but there is too many abusive admins...bad admins who need to pass the site to someone else
hypocrisy at its best for money gaining...
What a bunch of hypocrites these admins. the name says it all (Mugen Archives), it's suppose to be a library for mugen resources to all mugen lovers to get and download anything they wanted for free without limitations apparently these doushebags who call themselves (admins) at this site are aiming for your donation once you pay them, you get all their policy privileges, it's mind boggling....For all mugen fans if you wanted to download or join a great community, i'd suggest Mugenguild.com is much much better than these clowns, and again everything is free without any limitations... they've been around for long enough for not to be a douche....
Great site led by brainless people.
This website arguably hosts the most MUGEN characters compared to the others, which is a great thing. It has a diverse number of categories and you can find whatever you want here.
However, it is disappointing and shameful that those who lead the site do not have any common sense at all.
They'd ban anybody who disagrees with them on site for the most ridiculous reasons. There are a lot of gaslighting and word twisting cases.
They implemented ad.fly and shrinkearn, in order to monetize free content, and at the same time, expose thousands of users to Trojans and malwares.
They also imposed a very stupid member system which cuts people out from viewing a large part of the site and reduces the download limit.
A lot of their white-knight members tend to create spam accounts to join other forums' Discord server and send death threats to people.
Not to mention, apparently the admins attempted to launch a DDoS attack towards other forums in April 2019, which is a completely illegal and unfathomable thing to do.
A greedy site that desperately needs a rework.
I despise this site and all it stands for. It’s basically a website that makes money off of other people’s content. (sometimes without their consent) The moderators (especially Dizzy) will ban anyone at even the slightest mention of criticism. (or even asking about adfly for that matter) The moderators supposedly have been known to make bot accounts specifically to promote their website. The download system is abhorrent, specifically because you must be beyond the “new challenger” account rank to download larger files, which is a inconvenience to the majority of people that use the site. They also use adfly, which can give your computer malware. The site itself sports possibly the largest collection of MUGEN characters and stages. Though certain characters (such as Big Bang Donald) that the creator never intended to make public, have been uploaded without permission. This website desperately needs to be reworked, because if this is one of the main representations of the MUGEN community, then the future looks grim.
