WMillboard Decking – Very Disappointing Experiencee installed decking boards from…
We installed decking boards from Millboard a few months ago, expecting a premium, high-quality product. While the boards look beautiful, our overall experience has been extremely negative.
After a short period, we started noticing a strong ammonia-like smell coming from the boards whenever they become damp – especially in the morning, evening, or after rain. The odor is so intense that it has become impossible to comfortably use our terrace.
Even worse, when we open the windows, the smell enters the house within minutes and spreads throughout the entire living space. This makes the situation not only unpleasant outdoors but also inside our home.
We followed all installation guidelines and standards when building the terrace, so this is not due to incorrect installation. After contacting Millboard, they acknowledged that there may be an issue with certain batches, possibly related to the coating material. However, they still claim it is not their responsibility.
This is especially frustrating considering that these boards are marketed as a premium product and come with a high price tag. You expect quality and reliability at this level, not a persistent and unbearable odor problem.
In conclusion, I cannot recommend this product. If you happen to receive a defective batch, you may end up with a terrace – and even a home – that smells strongly of ammonia.

We treated the planks with cleaning vinegar one week before your team arrived because the odor had become unbearable. That’s why there was nothing noticeable by the time they came. Unfortunately, the smell has returned after several months.
Contrary to what you mentioned, your distributor in the Netherlands confirmed that there have been similar odor issues in the past, so something doesn’t add up with the explanation we received.
It’s a pity your team couldn’t visit sooner, because even a single drop of water on the plank exposed to sunlight releases a strong ammonia-like smell. We simply couldn’t wait any longer since the odor was unbearable.
this can be removed if we come to a solution...

This is not a typical matter that we come across and so we conducted a thorough product investigation including a personal site visit to you, a full review of manufacturing records across all relevant batches, consultation with our raw material suppliers, and independent laboratory testing.
The findings were unambiguous: there was no indication that Millboard decking produces ammonia-type odours. No fault was identified in the product, the coating, or the manufacturing process, and there is no batch-related issue.
We are confident in the quality of our products, which are rigorously tested. Millboard decking is used by many thousands of customers across Europe and beyond, and continues to perform to the high standard it is designed and manufactured to.

I’ve had a really positive experience with Millboard so far. The sample arrived quickly and was really helpful in making my decision, and the support from Terry has been great so far.
I’m currently waiting on a bit of additional guidance around colour combinations, and I’m hopeful to get that soon to help bring everything together. Overall, a very supportive and helpful team.

Millboard coppered Oak on Plaspro subframe
Online design guide is very useful for determining subframe layout & materials list. Higher price point than other composite decks but the quality of materials & detailed install guides and instructions can’t be faulted. Went with coppered oak boards on plaspro subframe to replace an old treated timber deck. While it’s early days yet as the deck is only installed with 6 months, I had no issues with anything so far from ordering to installation and aesthetically the finished deck meets the expectation of the premium price.

I ordered some samples of the millboard cladding to show a customer and was very impressed how quickly the got delivered. The quality of the samples is spot on have now been in touch with Millboard with some plans to work out quantities.

Great Training Experience with Outstanding Support
I recently attended Millboard training as part of the approved installer process and had a genuinely great experience.
The sessions were well organised, informative and hands-on, with a really good balance of product knowledge and practical installation guidance. Lauren was incredibly helpful throughout — communication was clear, everything ran smoothly, and she even went out of her way to arrange for dietary requirements, which was a thoughtful touch and very much appreciated.
Russell was also fantastic on the training day, going above and beyond to offer tailored advice, hands-on support and a wealth of relevant knowledge that felt directly applicable to real projects. That level of practical insight made a big difference and gave us real confidence moving forward.
Overall, a very positive experience with a welcoming and knowledgeable team. I’m looking forward to completing our first Millboard installation in the coming weeks and continuing to work with them going forward.

We have used Millboard on a handful of projects in a short space of time on Commercial projects. Their technical & sales staff are great and have been flexible to allow us to pick up replacements and additional materials when needed form Coventry.

I would love to give a positive review…
I would love to give a positive review but unfortunately our order has been completely messed up and the wrong colour quoted and ordered in error by the retailer and now we are being charged £2500 restocking fee. I am absolutely in despair at how this can have happened when we only ever wanted one colour and the retailer was briefed and asked to quote by Millboard’s sale lady. We travelled 3 hours to see their display centre in person after the local reseller knew little to nothing about the product and had zero display. Then after all this effort we get the wrong colour sent and are told we are now liable. Cannot believe they are not doing the decent thing and think we are going to have to take legal advice now.

Having reviewed everything with the merchant, I’m pleased to confirm that no restocking charge has been applied and that your order has been honoured at last year’s pricing, including the revised quantities requested by your contractor. I completely understand how worrying the situation must have felt at the time, and I’m glad we’ve been able to provide clarity.
From what we can see, the confusion arose around the colour selection at the point the order was placed. We always recommend a final confirmation before orders are processed, but we do appreciate how easily misunderstandings can happen during a busy project.
I’m sorry again for the stress this caused you. We genuinely want every Millboard experience to feel positive and straightforward, and I’m pleased this has now been resolved.

We had Millboard decking installed by…GRK Build
We had Millboard decking installed by an approved contractor on 28th March 2019. We have now noticed the surface on the decking is wearing and showing the primer under the grey on the areas where we walk. There is only myself and my husband living in the house, so minimal wear and tear. Apparently the guarantee in total is 25years on a sliding scale. As the decking was installed nearly 7 years ago the guarantee only covers 80% of a claim, which I understand from the guarantees terms and conditions. However, after sending photographs and all the information required by Millboard they are refusing to honour my claim, only offering a resurfacing service at a cost of £152. I am very disappointed as I understood Millboard to be a reputable company. How wrong can you be. If you are thinking of having Millboard decking installed make sure it's in an area where you don't have to walk on it!!!!!

We completely understand why you feel disappointed, particularly when the affected areas are the main walking routes that appear have worn unusually quickly and you’ve chosen Millboard expecting a premium, long-lasting finish.
We also want to apologise for how this was handled. It’s clear that receiving an email response without first having a proper conversation added to the frustration and confusion about our proposal to help you. We’re sorry we didn’t pick up the phone sooner to talk it through with you directly. That’s the level of service you should expect from us.
To clarify one key point: this isn’t being treated as a warranty claim, so the sliding scale is not relevant here. The resurfacing option discussed was intended as a practical solution to restore the appearance of the boards, and the amount referenced was intended as a contribution towards the overall cost which we didn’t make clear initially.
Thank you again for speaking with us and giving us the opportunity to put this right. We’ve now agreed the next steps and will be moving forward with the resurfacing to help restore the finish as quickly as possible.
