Micropress delivered a highly disappointing job. On a print run of 1,000 booklets, over 200 had to be rejected because of poor printing or damage due to inadequate packaging.
Quality control was non-existent. Over 100 copies had streaked ink on the cover, in a consistent, ugly mark, pointing to a persistent error that should have been spotted either on press, during lamination/cutting, or packing. This was waved through.
Other defects included copies missing the magenta plate on the front cover, and a run of 16 with the inside cover missing up to three of the colour plates. Again, the quality control was non-existent. A significant number of copies also displayed what appeared to be tiny pieces of paper debris trapped under the laminate as unsightly specs and, in some especially bad instances cases, speckled dust.
The booklets were then packed tightly in boxes with no protection, despite my giving explicit prior instruction that they needed to be packed carefully with padding. Instead, this instruction was completely ignored and the booklets were packed in a sideways/upright configuration with no protection whatsoever, left to rub up against the cardboard and each other. As a result, 2 copies out of every box of 32 had pronounced, ugly track marks on the covers, and other copies were ruined by carelessly being shoved into too-tight spaces, causing badly crushed corners. Almost 70 were ruined because of this. Of the 32 boxes on the pallet, only 31 arrived intact, with a heap of booklets piled loosely on top of the pallet, creased and covered in dust and dirt.
In total, 217 copies were either significantly damaged or had errors in printing. Micropress were not willing to reprint those booklets, instead only offering to scalp the rejected copies and bind them with reprinted covers. The booklet was designed with numerous images bleeding off the pages, which would have been highly compromised by the retrimming required. The attitude of their Customer Services Director was intransigent and at times extraordinarily dismissive; Ultimately, quality was not deemed a determining factor and I was expected to accept an inferior, compromised product.
Having worked in publishing for almost two decades, this is the most dispiriting experience I have ever had with a printer. Mistakes happen – we can all live with that – but Micropress' refusal to offer any satisfactory solution speaks for itself. A refund for the useless copies was given, representing an impasse rather than a resolution.
During one of my telephone conversations disputing the quality of the work, the company's Customer Service Director claimed that a 50% defect rate on a print run would be an acceptable result. Perhaps I should count myself lucky that only 200 were useless rather than 500.
Micropress' website promises "Impressive Customer Service and Outstanding Print Quality". Based on my experience, they have no business doing so, since both claims are demonstrably untrue.
Very helpful and attention to detail in making sure the proof was correct before printing.

Absolutely exceptional service, even over Christmas!
We were let down last minute for the crucial first promotional run of our new magazine. Micropress were recommended by a competitor who was closing up for the hols, ordered using their excellent online system on the 23rd Dec, high quality product delivered as advertised on the 3rd Jan.
Seriously impressive throughout and gives me confidence that we could scale our print offering with them.

I have now deal with Micropress for over a year, in that time they have become our main supplier for larger printed items. The service and price are very good. Excellent print quality. Prices are usually very competitive. Our account manager Chris Hackett is always available on the phone and very pro-active. My only bad comment would be in the dispatch dept. More attention to the secure wrapping of pallets is required in my option.
But a overall very good service at the right prices.
