Very helpful and knows a lot about how various fixtures should work and what components to replace, which are very valuable knowledge! Definitely a champion for LCI residents!

I hired and paid Philip Gaertner in full (£90) to fit two roller blinds for me on the 15th March 2023. I showed him pictures and where they needed to go on the ceiling a week prior to his arrival.

First, he was late for 20 minutes. When he got here he did not bring basic equipments such as a ladder. He said he expected me to have furniture or chairs for him to stand on. He then offered to go back to grab his ladder but by that time he was already 30 minutes late and I did not have enough time for him to go back and come back. I allowed him to stand on a new stool unwillingly (the only furnitures I had in my flat at the time). During the task I had to stand on another one of my chairs (a nicer, more expensive one) to help him fit the blinds, when I got down he just stood on that chair without asking and said “I prefer standing on this one”, and got dust all over my chairs, he didn’t even clean them unless I told him to. At one point he even asked me if he could stand on my bed which I obviously said no to. This shows a complete lack of regard of personal boundaries and general respect for his clients' households. It made me very uncomfortable as a woman who lives alone to have a stranger ask me if he can stand on my bed.

When he was fitting the blinds he left three holes on the wall since he could not drill through them, the blind also fell and scrapped onto the white walls and left some visible damages on the wall. I understand that accidents happen and simply asked him to fix it the next time he comes. I did not place blame on him in any way at the time. I even asked him to come for more jobs despite the damages and the incorrect positioning of the hook of the blinds that he placed.

I asked him to drill 3 more holes (2 minor tasks): one on the shelf for a cable to fit through, and 2 for a wall mount mirror. I said that they shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes and asked very politely whether he was able to do it. He gave me a very disrespectful, defensive and unprofessional response without any provocation, and said he can fix his damages but did not feel comfortable doing further tasks.

I said that he does not have to perform the additional tasks if he does not feel comfortable but he must fix the damages that he caused.

He first declined my booking request for fixing the damages. He then said he would come back to fix the holes, but at this point, as a woman who lives alone, I no longer feel safe and comfortable with him returning to my flat. I also did not want him to come again and damage something else as a result of fixing the previous damages he made. He has ignored my messages asking for a partial refund and claimed that he did not make those damages.

My flat is a brand new flat that has never been lived in by anyone else. I can confidently say that the walls were spotless before he came. I have requested a chargeback claim from my bank as well as reported this business to the trading standards government organization.

To anyone reading this review: Philip is not the official appointed handyman of London City Island despite using their name and logo. Other people have had similar experiences but received backlash when trying to speak up in the City Island facebook group, they are currently in the process of informing Ballymore as this business is profitting off of people's assumption that he is connected to Ballymore when in reality isn't the case.

He was hired to perform one task and he did not perform it to an acceptable standard as there are still damages on the wall and incorrectly placed hooks. When requested a timeslot for him to fix it he declined the booking request and ignored my messages requesting a partial refund.

I highly urge whoever is reading this review think twice about hiring him. He will manipulate the narrative and frame it as if he is "helping a neighbor" for free, but in reality he was paid in full and hired like any other handyman or freelancer.

I am happy to provide screenshots, videos and correspondence as evidence for every single statement that I have stated above.

Phil did a great job hanging our curtain rail and has also managed to explain what was the issue with our dimmable lights. He is a super friendly guy, very knowledgeable and professional. He has also provided us with great tips on other things we wanted to implement/do and we’re happy we found someone who will help us make our home feel better. Thank you Phil, you are awesome!

Was in a bind to get some paint for touch ups before moving out. Phil was super responsive on messenger etc to coordinate timing for pickup and got the paint at a great price. Also a gent in general to deal with, great to have someone like that on the island who knows their stuff

I purchased Cooker hood extractor filter from Philipp. It was quick and saved me hassle of trying to find it online.

Phil fit an under sink filter for us. Everything went smoothly and he went above and beyond where he put a water sensor under the sink incase of any leaks which I was concerned about. I would definitely recommend.
