DO NOT USE THEM TO SELL YOUR ITEMS
DO NOT USE THEM TO SELL YOUR ITEMS.
It might be fine for buyers, but do NOT sell your valuable furniture on here.
The payouts they give are so tiny (they might sell it 25-50% of what you paid for it, you then only get 25% of what they sell it for, meaning you get literal pennies on what you'd originally paid) you'd be better off donating it, giving it to a friend, or sell it yourself for 3x the profit on craigslist or another platform.
To give the sellers such a tiny percentage is wild, KAIYO do better and up your payouts as word will travel fast among people that this is a scam.
Don't use Kaiyo
I tried using Kaiyo as it sounded perfect for us. We need to sell three pieces all in great shape. We had two basically new Lovesac chairs, and a designer chandelier. They promised 24 appraisal and even had me enter a credit card "in case they had to charge me for not being around when they came to pick it up." Two weeks later I finally got in touch with customer service who had no idea why no one had gotten back to me. Two days after that call I got an email that none of my furniture was sellable by them, but they could give me a discount on junk hauling. DO NOT USE.
Unsustainable Business Model.
If you want to sell, you have to submit your item to see if they take it. That’s completely fine because they have a level of approval but nowhere states an approximation of what types of fees and how much commission they take. Not transparent. To save time and frustration, it’s probably easier (but just as stressful) to just deal with buyers yourself and get 100% of your asking price.
If you want to buy, their ads say “up to 90%”. Keyword: “UP TO”. Often times, you visit the website and find very few items and they’re only around 10-15% off from retail. As per law, you still have to pay sales tax even for secondhand items. The furniture and decor prices are insane for secondhand hand. There’s no guarantee the furniture will come undamaged and you have no idea how their customer service is. At that point, you might as well just buy retail and get the full customer service you deserve should you run into problems. That’s not to say there’s no deals there, but the furniture that are in like-new condition and from reliable brands are often “discounted” very low compared to their less desirable items. If you check the lamp section, not a single one of them is under $100 (at least not what I saw). They also don’t authenticate art which is fine but they still sell random pieces for over $100 and most of the stuff look like you could find it for free in the trash.
Many people including myself commented on IG about the furniture prices being high and many other commenters were ignorant and disagreed. They clearly don’t know how this works. Kaiyo has to mark up the furniture otherwise they don’t make money, so in return, higher prices and low “discounts”. In addition to the fact they have to make enough money to function, many sellers are probably getting burned from the fees. As I mentioned again, might as well buy retail. If you want to talk environmental impact, then you’ll also realize furniture is heavy and one of the most difficult types of item to store, sell and transport. So IMO, this company has a very financially poor and unsustainable business model. To me, hassling myself with a secondhand sofa for only $100 off retail isn't worth my personal stress. Expensive furniture especially the ones Kaiyo resells rarely get thrown out anyway; it's Target, Walmart, Amazon, IKEA furniture that are always in the dumps here in NYC.
Furniture arrived dirty and damaged
Avoid this company. First they delayed my deliver a week only a day before it was scheduled to be delivered.
When it was finally delivered, it arrived and was dirty and covered in dust and there was rust on the steel. It had clearly not been professionally cleaned. If that wasn’t bad enough, we noticed one of the sliding doors was completely split and broken. It’s unusable for now and I will need to figure out how to get it repaired because not once did Kaiyo ever offer to clean ro repair this.
Horrible experience.
Only Rec’d 28% of my sales price
Only Rec’d 28% of my sales price. I definitely could have done better selling it myself and taking 100%. Would not use them again. They are not forthcoming about their consignment share percentages. I rolled the dice and got burned. Lesson learned.
Too Much Hassle to Sell Used Furniture
I gave them my in-demand sofa on October 29, 2022 and now November 21, 2022, they are reprocessing my sofa for sale for the past 2 weeks. No one responds when I email and text them. This is the bad, terribly slow AF consignment place for your used sofa. You have to log into their dashboard to find out what’s going wrong and no one updates you. They don’t make selling your used furniture easy!
