JH Customer Service Sucks!
A former employer rolled over my 401K to an annuity with John Handcock. I have been on the phone for over two hours, transferred to other departments all over the world, and still am no closer to getting this resolved. What a complete waste of time. I saw other reviews that put JH in a very terrible light. I now know why they received the reviews the did...their customer service sucks!

CAVEAT EMPTOR!! CAVEAT EMPTOR!! I have had a Life Insurance policy with John Hancock since 2001, a 20-year level term policy. I received a letter last month from JH stating that my premium, when the term ends in December, will go from 1052 per year to 21105, an increase of 2006%!!!!! This is beyond outrageous, and since the only thing the contract says is that they may increase the premium at the end of the term(no mention ANYWHERE of how MUCH), this seems to be arbitrary and abusive. In fact, it also seems to be illegal as Massachusetts consumer law states(and they are based in Boston) that they may ONLY raise the rate by 10%. Even if they were to double the rate, I would continue to pay it, but to raise it OVER 20x what I had been paying seems beyond illegal. Since I live in Florida, it seems I am under Florida law, which offers NO PROTECTION in terms of consumer rights. When I called the company to discuss this, I was put on permahold, then was finally answered by a call center in the Phillippines, who told me it would take 24-48 hours to get a response AFTER ESCALATION of this issue. I had also previously filed a complaint with the Florida Insurance Commission, where one person essentially told me:'that's the way it is - they can do whatever they want' a follow-up call at least got a complaint registered and when John Hancock received the complaint, they had someone from their legal department(who knew NOTHING despite her repeated claims of:'I have been in this company over 40 years...' that I became so outraged that I called back to request a copy of my original contract with them(try and find a document after 20 years) that this lady from their legal dept. told me there might be a charge to send it to me(they could email to me for free...) Enough is enough from corporations that just treat people like dirt after a 20-year association and anyone who thinks they are a good company, has not reached the end of their term, and to outsource calls is just not right. Finally, it is my belief that if it had come to them paying the policy due to my demise, that my family would have been give the run-around trying to collect and despite the name they are trading on, that they are just another corporate pirate, Just try getting them one the phone...

simply the best: hassle-free, affordable, quick
I started looking for life insurance a month ago, after letting my former 20-year term policy lapse in January. Reached out to a couple of generic online insurance aggregators, called my car & home insurance broker, etc. Everything was a huge hassle: forms that needed to be downloaded, printed, signed, scanned, and appointments, etc. Then I got a call from a John Hancock agent. After just an hour and quick digital permission to reach out to my primary care physician to get the results of a recent physical, it was DONE. Same day. No hassle, no forms. Simply amazing. And at a better price than any of the other plans I was looking at.

Super easy to apply online and I received the discounted Apple Watch. This was a huge incentive for a standard term policy.

Changed denial reason (7 months later) after I proved they were incorrect with supporting documentation.

For the last 7 months, John Hancock who sends their claims to Seven Corners has denied me because they believed I claimed items that they thought had been returned to Amazon. After 3 reviews where they didn’t look at my supporting documents, 2 independent investigations through G4S and Optima, 3 way phone calls with Amazon, and hours adding additional information on each and every item they believed was returned (40 items-took 10 hours to prepare). Then sending an additional 72 pages of proof on top of the original 90 they’ve had on day one.....they just changed their denial reason.
Simple as that!
I showed through 4 different ways that nothing was returned and then after 7 months, 20+ emails and 20+ Phone calls they just decide to change the denial reason to another so I’m back to square one!
The most egregious part is that they reverted to the original denial letter that claimed I had other providers that I did not tell them about. This was despite the fact that I had ALREADY proven THAT was false. Which was also the reason they had changed THAT denial reason to claiming items were returned.
I provided emails, investigation contacts, phone calls...you name it. I easily showed that from day one I had multiple policies through my emails and initial claim (I had 14 checked bags). On the initial claim report I listed that I had at least another policy (there is only room for 1). So, I then sent them each policy name, policy number, and their contact number. I gave them G4S's investigators number who was doing an investigation with AMEX..so again, they knew I had other carriers. This was given BEFORE they made a decision the FIRST time. There is absolutely no reason, no sane person, could possibly misinterpret me as trying to conceal I had other policies! None.
It's absolutely maddening how they can this to people ethically. Not to mention, it's completely illegal. Horrible, unethical company..STAY FAR AWAY!

Edit: Have filed BBB complaint. Lori the manger I spoke to who requested 40 items they believed were returned will not respond via her email. Can someone explain how after 3 incorrect reviews about Amazon items being returned, the claim denial can be changed to an earlier denial reason that was also already proven untrue. Waiting for next manager John to talk to, whom is days late to respond. No one here, messenger, or email will respond. I’m stuck endlessly calling the phone reps (which I will continue to do relentlessly) until I speak to a manager.

John Hancock and the vitality program have been great for me. What a fun way to monitor and achieve my health goals. The app is so user friendly and the learning tools and rewards really keep me engaged.

Honestly, their app picks and chooses what it counts toward rewards. You get “vitality points” for what seems like no reason But they’re actually fairly useless. I have the Apple Watch reward through them and I spent months paying because their app didn’t register my workouts half the time. They say “get x number of workouts to spin the vitality wheel” I’ve been stuck on 8 out of 10 for over a week. Even though I hit their ever changing requirements every time. I’ve brought these issues their attention and they only offered excuses and blame. It’s all a bit of a sham really.
