If I could give them negative 5 stars I would. Products they sell are horrible. Their products were so bad I paid and took a loss for them to take them back. Save yourself the headache and your money and DO NOT purchase anything from this business.
Terrible quality
Terrible quality. This company is selling Chinese goods pretending to be authentic Japanese. Very low quality and very poor service. EDIT* When I said poor quality I meant the base mats are cheaply made woven straw with fill and arrive dirty, in dirty boxes that smell bad. The futon mattress is single stitched and incredibly over-stuffed with cotton which creates a terrible sleeping experience within 2 months, and does not allow you to fluff or treat the futon as it should be fluffed and treated. This is the worst $800 I have ever spent in my life and I personally think J-Life should no longer be in business. I hope this clarifies my experience more accurately, please stop sending me 10% discount coupons I will never do business with you again.

I bought the 9x9 set from them
I bought the 9x9 set from them. The box one came in had a giant hole in it and the mat is crushed on one end. I reached out to jlife to do an exchange after sending pics and they are telling me no. There a significantly better rated companies you can buy this mat from. And I will get my replacement from them.
The product is not the same as it used to be.
In the past I bought a 3" thick queen size futon it worked perfectly for 4yrs, and I gave it away when I moved. I bought a 3" cot size from them 2yrs ago and it was great. I just recently bought another cot size one to match the one I have and its a completely different product. Different packaging, different fabric, noticeably lighter than my original cot size futon. It looks much more cheaply made. I'm very disappointed and I want a refund.
Order never shipped and when we requested them to cancel they suddenly sent
Ordered from them and accidentally put in the incorrect ship to address, contacted them immediately and advised they could not change???? How this was impossible, no idea. Then the person whose address it was sent to kept checking and nothing. A month later still nothing. Checked the tracking information was sitting in a warehouse somewhere (keep in mind this is well past Christmas so much for that gift). I contacted customer service to cancel and was told they couldn’t because the order had been fulfilled. I said they don’t seem to understand what fulfilled meant since we didn’t have the product and we wanted to cancel. Lo and behold suddenly the product we no longer want is being sent! Now we’re stuck with it after telling them to cancel the order.
It is a total SCAM
It is a total scam! Do not buy from J-life international! I paid lots of money for a high quality product, they sent me a poor quality one, nothing what was described. Then they refused to refund! On top of that they charged me for shipping, yet they failed to pay to the shipping company and now I get a bill from the shipping company too. Complete scam! There are plenty of other good online companies, but this one is the worst I've ever dealt with!

Fake Futons, Fake Made in USA, Crazy return fee costs
I initially bought from J Life thinking that all they're products are made in the USA, then I get a box saying that its "Made in China." They did not really make an effort to disclose this anywhere on their tatami mat pages. They hide in the product catalog and you have to click the read more section to even know that its made in China. They also try to claim their products are USA made on their front page while never disclaiming they use Chinese labor to assemble their tatami mats. Very clever, yet scummy marketing. If you told me your tatami mats were made assembled in China I would've never bought them, even if you use materials from Japan.
Later, I emailed the support for a return, now "Kristen" says they want to charge a 25% restocking fee and won't even give me a return label. Ridiculous. You know what you should do Josh? Put the fact that all your tatami mats are ASSEMBLED in China using Japanese materials in your product descriptions AND your front page. Honesty goes a LONG way in Business, and if you were more HONEST I bet your trustpilot reviews wouldn't be so HORRIBLE. This is simply slimey business behavior. I do NOT recommend buying from this company at ALL.

My queen size futon grew mold
My queen size futon grew mold. I was never able to get anyone to respond to the customer service phone number no matter how many times I called. I owned the futon for 6 months - no reason for it to grow mold in this time unless there was moisture already inside of the futon.
Excellent!
I'm not sure what some people are talking about... Yes there is a turnaround period because everything is made to order. I've called them a few times and they were super helpful and responsive. They even gave me a partial refund because there was a sale a few days after I ordered and they refunded the difference! I've had everything for several months and the quality is amazing. I will be purchasing more products in the future.
money hungry company.
I'm in horrible pain 10/10. Each day that goes buy is like weeks. After almost 2 weeks they haven't even began to fulfill my $300 order.
Never again.

Incredibly slow response time on a bulk order. 20 emails later they simply cancel my order, leading me on for weeks, for no good reason. Since reading other reviews too I realised that they’re not very good quality either and very unreliable.

I ordered a tatami mat on the website
I ordered a tatami mat on the website, thinking it was hand made and exclusive to J-Life. They don't disclose on the ordering pages that the tatami mats are actually mass-produced items made in China with some cardboard parts. The ordering pages imply that they had some say in the making of this product (seeing as they call it "our tatami mats" and say things like, "here at J-Life we use a traditional black cloth for tatami-fuchi",) but that is not true. After it was too late to cancel, I found the exact same mats on other websites from the same manufacturer. In fact, the mat came double-boxed: all J-life did was slide the manufacturer's box into one of their own boxes. The mats are essentially drop-shipped at double the price.
Oh, and their website only allows positive reviews. If you post a negative one, it's instantly deleted.

Shikifuton
I had a problem with my J Life International shikifuton. I contacted the company to see about fixing the issue. It took several people and a couple of weeks but I was finally able to get the situation resolved. They were even kind enough to not only replace it but to include a cover at no cost to me.
Cheap made in China stuff
This site sells poor quality stuff made in China stuff. I was given an item from this website as birthday gift, it is not only poorly copied, the packaging was broke, the color is off and a cheap piece of paper covered the bottom which is piled with junks!!!

I ordered two japanese style pillows on August 19th, 2023. I ordered them for a birthday on September 6th. On September 1st, I reached out to check the status - no one ever answers the phone. No one returned my voicemail message. Again, I called September 6th. No response again. Today I called, September 11th. No one answers and no one replied.
Crappy service.
The response from the company is ridiculous. I had no contact for weeks, even after emailing them directly on their website and calling snd leaving voicemails. Four hours? That’s a joke folks.

The futon sagged after ONE day
I got two futons from them. The futons started to developed a dip after ONE day of use. After two weeks of use the area where the hip/butt rest compressed to one inch (should be 4 inches) and caused sciatica pain for my partner who had to take a week off work unpaid. So almost $700 worth of futons down the drain within 2 weeks! I reached out to J Life on day 16 and they sent me a replacement futon which I didn't request. I just wanted a refund for the two I already got. They wanted me to pay for the return shipping and 25% stock fee which would literally give me no money back after all that. I'm so disappointed with the customer service and quality of these futons. I've never regretted a purchase more in my life.

If you want to see the quality of the…
If you want to see the quality of the futon just look at what a gold bond cot feels like. There is nothing japanese about this business or its products. They use gold bond mattresses, and the tag is literally still on the mattress.
The problem is the quality, I got a second futon from thefutonshop.com and I would choose them or an amazon futon. Honestly very dissatisfied with the product.
I wanted to have a refund. I tried to reason with them because the bed was lumpy, I would have shipped it back but they wouldn't stick with their policy and wanted to charge me for shipping on a 50lb item. I also didn't have the box in good condition enough to use to ship back.

Allergic Reaction
The shikibuton has a strong odor that I thought was from having been packaged and that would dissipate. It actually got worse, and I woke up Sunday morning wheezing, with a headache, sore throat, itchy eyes, and itchy skin. Customer service’s was response was that “some people just don’t like the smell of the mattress.” It comes across as gaslighting to try to evade any responsibility for a product that is irritating to people with allergies, other immune system issues, and asthma. Subsequently, I saw other complaints online; the company knows there is a problem. But, they also know the cost and hassle of shipping back a big, heavy, awkward-to-maneuver shikibuton defeats the purpose, so likely figure that once they’ve got your money that you will give up in exasperation. The shikibuton cover was impossible for me to get on the shikibuton (it is like a big pillow case with no gusset to accommodate the mattress width and I had already arranged for the case’s return.) The skikibuton was sagging after only 2 days of usage, and in addition to an allergic reaction, I woke up sweating on Sunday, so the thing also excessively traps body heat. Guess what, JLife? I am not giving up, I am going public with my experience, have filed a BBB complaint, and I am disputing the charge with my bank. Hopefully more people will speak up as well. This is unacceptable.
Great experience
Had a great experience with this company. Fantastic service and very friendly service. 100% recommended.
Bed bugs in their tatami mats. Do not buy!
Their company sells tatami mats that come with Tatami Bugs. The customer service takes no responsibility. Their phone number never works, no one ever picked up the phone. No chance to talk to any live persons. Emails took a few days with ignorant response. DO NOT BUY FROM THEM! Do not support a company that does not stand behind the quality of their products.
