HETAS is the national organisation working for consumer safety and the wider public interest in safe, efficient and environmentally responsible use of biomass and other solid fuels. Our purpose is 'Working together for a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment'. Through our website you can search for approved and registered installers, chimney sweeps, retailers, servicing technicians and products ranging from stoves through to biomass boilers. HETAS operates it’s competent person scheme under authorisation from The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) and overseen by The United Kingdom Accreditation Services (UKAS) under the certification standard BSENISO 17065:2012. HETAS is part of Cleaner Safer Group.

Falls short of what the consumer needs
Whilst the objectives of this organisation are probably noble, the outcomes are poor for consumers. It is often difficult to check on whether a contractor is Hetas registered because they often operate under trading names which are different from registered names. And when you do find the contractor, they don't display the registration number on the listing so you can't check.
My recommmendations to Hetas is that they should not just list the names of businesses alone. They should list individuals by name and their registration number, and they should compel trade members to show their registration online and on their correspondence / invoices.

We fully recognise the importance of making it as easy as possible for consumers to verify whether a contractor is HETAS registered. Our website includes a search function that allows users to look up businesses by both business name and registration number. However, we understand that trading names can sometimes differ from legal registered entity names, which can make this process less straightforward than it should be.
To help maintain trust and accuracy, HETAS undertakes routine registration checks to ensure that businesses are registered under their correct legal entity and that their insurance details align with their registration. This is a key part of how we maintain the integrity of the scheme.
We also encourage all registered businesses to clearly display their HETAS registration number on their websites, correspondence, and invoices, and to link directly to their HETAS listing wherever possible. This improves transparency and allows consumers to verify credentials quickly and with confidence. Alongside this, our team is always happy to assist directly if anyone needs help confirming a registration.
Your suggestion around providing more detailed listing information, including how individuals are represented, is appreciated. We are continually reviewing how we present information and how we can further strengthen transparency and usability for consumers. As a not-for-profit organisation, we do need to carefully balance enhancements with available resources, but ongoing development in this area remains a priority.

Changing Business name
Who would know changing from a sole trader to a Ltd company could create such a headache but thank you to Julia and Laurie they were lovely to deal with and made sure the process was as smooth as possible

Abbie was amazing in my recent experience with Hetas.
It was surrounding a complex adjustment to an existing registration and I’d spoken to a couple of other people over a period of 2 weeks and wasn’t really getting anywhere. From the moment Abbie answered the phone she was amazing.! she tracked down exactly what form we needed and went out of her way to make sure we were sorted. Calling through to other departments and briefing different teams on what what’s happening ect calling me back and keeping me in the loop as to what we may / may not need to do. Just extremely helpful from start to finish and sorted things within a few hours for me. I called this morning having not made much progress and at the time of writing this review it’s basically done thanks to Abbie..!
