Editor’s Note
  1. Sophia Schoepfer, Editor
The Mirror and the Light concludes one of the great classics of the modern age, the Wolf Hall Trilogy. This is an opulent edition, befitting a royal court, and Igor & Marina's intricate sketches perfectly complement Mantel's rich observational style. To mark the close of this epic trilogy, actor and playwright Ben Miles has written an afterword that provides a fascinating insight into the woman behind the genius.‘Being familiar with Mantel's novels, as well as their BBC adaptations, we felt a strong connection to the material. What made the project even more meaningful was Hilary Mantel’s involvement in the early stages. Her thoughts on the first book helped shape our vision. And after her untimely passing, there was this sense of creating with her in mind — hoping that our work would live up to her high standards. It was both a privilege and a responsibility.’

Absolutely stunning! These books are collectors items, hence the price. I am thrilled with mine and my collection of folios is growing bigger each year. I will forever be a fan.

I have purchased all three of Folio's editions of Hilary Mantel's "Wolf Hall" trilogy. Each book is magnificent: the original illustrative art work and the quality of the books' printing and binding. Every Folio volume is a constant pleasure to see, hold, and read.

The third volume to complete my Folio Cromwell collection. Again, beautifully produced and illustrated. A pleasure to read and own.

Well, the banner on the spine is taller than the other two in the trilogy (Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies), and the inconsistency is annoying, especially given that in every other respect, the series is beautifully done. Igor and Marina's illustrations pay subtle and great (and sometimes humourous) homage to Holbein, and if at first the monochrome pencil drawings seem underdone, they soon grow on you (for me, in a big way). Then there's the superb damask like covers and the full gold edging, not forgetting the ribbons, making these feel more like LEs than SEs. There's nothing much more to be said re the content. This trilogy is simply some of the finest historical fiction I've ever read, and despite what became known as 'Mantelgate' on social media due to popular consternation around the banner inconsistency, this FS series is essential.
