zero safety and security protocols
I wouldn't even know about this site if not for the stalking and harassment I have received from it since my mother passed away.
findagrave has ZERO safety protocols on their site. Their rules about removing profiles require deceased people to be alive (only parents, siblings, and children....all of whom are dead). You can't show proof of next of kin to manage your own family's profiles. You can't even block people.
The site is wonky, and their rules are literally impossible. It is a gross violation of my safety and security that they will allow some random person to manage a profile for my family. I'm all that is left of my family. I'm the only one who matters in this case. I'm the one being stalked and harassed by members of findagrave
FindaGrave provides a useful service…
Find-a-Grave provides a useful service publishing online photographs of gravestones (the sooner the better before they become badly eroded). This enables people to find gravestones of relatives which must be a good thing.
But you do get rogue elements, though mostly if someone wants an edit to their family grave, if that person joins Find-a-Grave they can submit an edit or ask the current owner for a transfer.
I personally find it difficult when someone decides to do their own research and then asks me to update a memorial I manage, of someone they are not related to. If I refuse, the request can be resubmitted to a Find-a-Grave adviser who has the final say. These advisers do not always make suitable decisions - for example one user decided to expand a name abbreviation and asked me to change the memorial. I was unhappy to change what was carved on the stone, as he could be wrong. The Find-a-Grave adviser let it through, although I manage the memorial. They also let through a lot of poor research. If someone was buried in a place, it does not mean they were born there for instance! Too much educated guess work goes on. This I find extremely frustrating.
Also, I would like to be able to block users who submit too many edits - usually too much educated guess work. There is no facility for this. And while the advisers ask for no more than 2 refused edits per day from a user, they cannot prevent more than 2 to managers.
Find A Grave Administrators Collaberation against Users
Katrina, senior manager contacted me and said she would help me have my family transferred to me. I just keep getting asked about my parents, siblings, aunts and uncles. WHY?? they have nothing to do with it. I sent them a copy of my family tree to them 3 times. Alex, Mikinna, Amber, Caleb and SMSmith, SMS, or SMS53 have been horrible to me. I re-reported them back to the BBB. What more can I do??
No one accepts oversight and it shows
I appreciate FIND A GRAVE as a site that can give far flung families a way to find relatives. However, there is a serious problem with the absence of “quality control.” I have discovered outrageous errors made by “super contributors” who (for instance) upload names from cemetery databases and fill in birth/death info with random dates. The Find a Grave customer service (so called) will not take action. When I tried, I received a series of replies suitable for “The Onion” or other parody. They pretended they did not understand my (carefully written) complaints. They won— I finally gave up.
The other huge problem that goes unchecked are contributors who interpret the Find a Grave guidelines in their own particular way and hold huge numbers of memorials hostage. They treat all the memorials they manage as their personal property. For instance, some will not add a spouse or child link unless you can send a copy of the cemetery plot deed. State or other government records mean nothing to the petty “memorials tyrants.”
Find a Grave offers memorialization for those not buried in a cemetery, but the “memorial Naziis” often only accept memorials with existing headstones. Again, Find a Grave customer service couldn’t care less.
The site relies on ads. I would pay a fee (really!) to have a live customer rep, someone with authority to act, hear my complaint. It is discouraging to put effort into high quality research and documentation only to be thwarted by petty and/or incompetent bully members.

OPT OUT
Families should be able to opt out of FindAGrave's data base, just the way they do with any other unwanted, unasked for annoyance. Not all of us share the enthusiasm 4 the sport as do FindAGrave's top "nut case" contributors.

I enjoy taking part in other people's family history through the site and taking photos in my area. It makes it easy to find relatives graves in certain graveyards too.
Ancestry and Find-A-Grave Desecrate My Ancestors
I have been researching my family, 7 generations farmers who began their American journey in Philadelphia in 1755, and eventually ended in Chicago in 1916.
Looking for a relative in Kentucky, I came across his grave in Lexington. When looking to cross-reference it with the Ancestry-owned Find-A-Grave, I discovered a listing for this relative.
This listing had been defaced with an added memorial from a non-family member, which included a Confederate Battle Flag and the statement that he was a "Kentucky and Southern Hero and a patriot".
Confederate soldiers and leaders are, and were, TRAITORS. NOT HEROS. TRAITORS.
Ancestry has been ignoring the issue which I understand is fairly widespread.,
