Exploitative non-refundable policy
Incredibly rude and combative behaviour from the moment I approached the desk. Our flight was delayed by 2 hours, as a result we were late to the desk by 2 hours and a few minutes.
They had cancelled our booking and I was down £150. They weren't interested in anything else once they confirmed everything was non-refundable. I couldn't even organise an alternative booking.
Lovely start to a midnight arrival in a foreign country.
Booked but let down.
We booked to use but sadly left stranded. Fight was delayed, and on arrival, they were nowhere to be seen. Customer care agent the following morning was rude, arrogant, and simply could not care less…. She said you did not show up, we deleted your reservation as a no show!
Complaining to HQ Greece fell on deaf ears… defensive d dismissive.
We were left paying an expensive taxi and wasted our morning after trying to find alternatives.

After booking through ADAC with my flight number entered, Europcar still marked me as a no-show - even though I arrived the same evening and the office was open. Stuck with no options, I was forced to rent the exact same car again at walk-up price (€842) just to continue my trip.
Later, during the new rental, I had to replace a defective windshield wiper myself to drive safely in the rain. Every issue - from the missed booking to the wipers - was met with the same line: "You have to email corporate." Nobody at the counter ever takes responsibility; everything gets pushed to head office until you give up.
They rely on one thing: that you won’t start your holiday by arguing over a few hundred euros.
Avoid.
Australin citizens be aware, they don't hire to Australian unless you also carry an Interntaional Driver's License
Incompetent Service. First of all, they do not operate on the grounds of Chania airport. There is no Europcar representation inside the airport or anywhere on the airport grounds. You need to phone them and wait until someone comes to pick you up and then they drive you quite a distance away from the airport to their office. I suggest you choose a company that does operate inside the airport and there are plenty to choose from.
Secondly, although we booked through a travel agent who confirmed our Australian driver's license is sufficient along with our passports, the young lady at the desk on 10th September 2025 refused to allow us to hire a car. She showed us their policy which said you need a driver's license printed in English OR an international driver's license. Perfect, we had our Australian driver's licenses printed in English so we should have been allowed to hire a car. But they said this policy means Australian citizens need BOTH an Australian driver's license AND an international license. We tried our best to explain the meaning of the word OR in their policy but they insisted it meant AND. So, for any Australian citizens, I suggest you do not book with Europcar unless you have an international driver's license to show as well.
We then went on to cancel all our remaining car hires with Europcar around the Greek islands for fear they might also not understand how to translate their policy.
Every other car hire company in Greece (5 different companies and places) all accepted our Australian driver's license without any problem and could not understand Europcar Chania's problem in interpreting their own policy.

La dame exécrable a l'accueil me dit c'est dans les conditions générales pas de retard, je lui demande de me les montrer rien n'y ai, je lui demande de m'en relouer une ( je me retrouve à pied) elle m'en repropose une au triple du prix de l'initiale, en a rien à faire de moi et de mes problèmes, j'avais louer à une marque pour essayer d'être tranquille c'est pire, j'appelle booking il me font un geste commercial mais je perd quand même presque la moitié de mon argent et je suis disponible pied une honte
Unfair Out-of-Hours Charge Be careful!!
Europcar Chania charged me an unfair EUR 59.99 out-of-hours fee after my flight was delayed. I confirmed that this charge was never disclosed in the booking terms or conditions, I complained and requested a refund to no avail. It feels like cheating customers by hiding such fees. Very disappointed and will not use Europcar again.

DO NOT/DO NOT/DO NOT RENT.Sure wish you would allow a .1 or zero rating. Sept 4-17 rental. Couldnt find the pick up location and took 45 min to find out from another car rental office. No info in emails that up was post 6 for their shuttle. Received the car on day one. While driving away, it was difficult to see from all the film and crap on the windshield in and out. No juice whatsoever using the windshield washer fluid. Totally empty, The air direction switch was broken and wouldn’t allow cold air through the dash vents. I returned the car next day looking for a vehicle exchange. Sure, that’ll be a 7€ cleaning charge. WHAT!!!, the car was filthy when I received it and I’m returning it on day two. 2nd car was replaced and windows still dirty as heck. Vehicle was returned and agent was slow as ever. 30 min later when almost done, she states there is a balance of 7€ for a cleaning fee. WHOA!!! I explained what happened and she says she’d be talking to her manager later. I left and immediately LOCKED MY CREDIT CARD. Bunch of B.S.

Extra insurance
They don’t accept debit or Revolut cards. To use one, they force you to purchase their full insurance, even though I had already paid for full insurance when making the booking from Booking.com

Disastrous experience from the start. We had three diffent cars in one week becase of two flat tyres, both caused by the tyres being completely worn out. The third car, which we had to wait three days to get, had no working AC.
Endless phone calls with the staff att the Chania office, who didn't seem to care at all.

So sad I did not read the reviews before. After long travels with my 2 small kids, when I finally was in Europcar in Chania, they told me that my card is not acceptable as it is not credit card. But they can use my card if I buy 270 euros insurance🤡which is more I paid for the car…just..don’t have any words to describe the feeling. I had paid insurance via booking.com. So I ended up going back to the airport, finding a new car..but loosing the money I had paid for Europcar booking. Such a bitter taste, when you come on a holiday with your kids and first experience is Europcar.

After paying for two cars from home, we couldn’t get the cars before giving a creditcard, not a debet card. From not one of the drivers BUT BOTH drivers, the credit card even HAD to be in the drivers name. An of course all problems go away if we PAY MORE? What the actual ….
Such a poor experience, bad service from Chania airport. Clearly a tiny scam they are running where problems go away when you just pay more.
I expect to be refunded for this “extra insurance” of 250€ we had to buy at 10 o’clock after a whole day of traveling.

I’m writing to express my deep frustration with the handling of the deposit requirement for my recent rental.
1. No advance disclosure of credit-card-only deposits
I paid the full rental price up front, yet nowhere—during booking, in the confirmation email, or in the terms—did it state that the security deposit could only be placed on a credit card. This critical condition was revealed only at pick-up.
2. Non-refundable, debit-card “security fee” makes no sense
I was told I could pay a non-refundable “security fee” with my debit card instead of placing a refundable deposit—an absurd policy. A simple cash or debit hold would protect you just as effectively, and I could reclaim it upon return. Forcing me to pay a charge I can never get back is indefensible.
3. Refusal to accept cash or a standard refundable debit hold
Your staff rejected both cash and a refundable debit authorization, even though either would have fully covered the deposit. This left me with no practical way to take the car I had already paid for.
4. Last-minute fees and wasted time
Because I was on a tight business schedule, this surprise policy forced me to scramble for alternatives and incur additional, non-refundable charges simply to keep my trip on track.
5. Misleading “paid in full” assurance
Advertising a “paid in full” rate implies that all mandatory payments are settled. If a credit-card authorization—or a non-refundable fee in lieu of one—is compulsory, customers must be told clearly and repeatedly before they finalize the reservation, not at the counter.
In short, I met every advertised requirement and paid in advance; yet, your undisclosed credit-card-only policy and non-refundable “security fee” blocked me from receiving the vehicle, costing me both time and money. I expect a prompt resolution and reimbursement for the extra charges incurred through no fault of my own.

Worst rental experience I've ever had. I strongly recommend finding a different company to rent from.
The service was terrible. I was charged extra fees for getting a flat tire, even though I had purchased the "zero excess insurance." On top of that, I received a car from a completely different price class than the one I paid for.
I booked through Europcar.com, but they claimed the reservation was made via a broker. As a result, the "additional driver" I had already paid for was not included. After some discussion, they eventually agreed to honor it - but they were not honoring anything. I had already paid for it.
The credit card that I used when booking, could not be used when arriving for pick up, since it had to be the main drivers credit card. This was not stated when booking the car, and in your booking confirmation it states "Credit card used for this booking in the name of the main driver". Thus, I was not able to pay the deposit with the credit card used for the booking since it with a credit card that wasn't the main drivers card. The main driver did not have a credit card - but a debit card - but then we had to pay 170 EUR to use that one. We asked them to change the main driver, but this was not an option, since they claimed it was booked via a "broker".
It was an absurd situation, especially considering we booked directly through their website.
The service was non-existent, and the staff at the branch showed no understanding of our situation. We arrived in the evening, and at 22:50 after discussing forth and back they told us they were closing in 10 minutes—despite the fact that their official closing time was 23:30. Yet another lie.
In the end, we had to pay the additional €170 fee for each of the two cars we booked to get the cars. We had no alternative.
The car we received was in a completely different price class than what we paid for—worth about half the value of the selected model. Had I known this, I would never have paid a premium for a better car. I would have just chosen the cheaper option.
I have submitted a claim to the company and they have not shown any understanding of the situation. Actually they only made it was by lying in their answer to the claim. They claim that the card you use - when paying for the booking online - is only for verification purposes. It is not. That is the card that have paid the bookings.
All in all, we felt scammed and. I strongly advise you to rent a car from anywhere else.
Prepaid rental ignored. Car not received. Money lost.
Car pick-up online booking made after business hours (23:30 vs. 23:00) due to late flight arrival. EUROPCAR CHQ Chania Airport manager alerted via phone and declared: "You cannot retrieve the car because you will not find anyone or come next day."
Next morning the same office landline was strangely not responsive as from 07:00am published office opening, despite succesive attempts. When reporting in person at 10am same manager ignored the original booking and asked for double the rate for a new rental notwithstanding still within the original rental day (less than 12 hours).
No way of course we would have accepted such practice not fitting a global brand as EUROPCAR.
Result rental fee lost: EUR38 (24 hours rental due funeral attendance). Lesson learned though.

MONZA next door walking from Chania airport terminal promptly offered a car for a nominal rate EXCESS INCLUDED as opposed to the excess exclusive EUROPCAR rate.
Moreover, MONZA are next door walking from CHQ airport terminal as opposed to Europcar requiring a shuttle. Monza welcoming professional team made the difference and saved the honor of Cretan Filotimo.
When renting cars in Chania, Crete go to MONZA.
Cheat allert
When i rented a car, and payed it, from home, it said in the agrement thet the car would be at "meet and greet", but there was no one from europcar to be seen.
I looked for them for a while, and then called them, and THEN they send a transfer-bus
Then they try to cheat me into bying some sort of ensurance, almost the same price as i payed, in advance, for renting a car for a week, so i called the danish branch, whitch i had worked for previosly, and they recommendet that i canceled the rental.
So i did.
I don't understand why europcar let these fraudsters use their name...
Scam artists
Scam artists. Do not prepay for your booking! Once they have your money they will use every trick they can come up with to avoid giving you a car and make you pay again. I ended up paying almost triple the amount I had originally agreed to. And they are extremely impolite.
Did not get my money back
Unfortunately, I also had bad experiences. The car was exchanged on the spot and I was suddenly asked to deposit over 1000 euros because the first car had to be checked. I just had a debit card for this. It has now been over a month since the vacation. I have never received a response from Europcar, nor have I received any money. It was all pretty bad.

Deux remarques : pas la moindre goutte d’eau dans le lave-glace et pneus sous-gonflés.
J’ai effectué moi-même cette petite maintenance (nécessaire) dans une station-service.
Ceci n’étant pas grave mais c’est une négligence qui aurait dû être évitée.
Je recommande Europcar Chania.

I would have given 0 stars if I could. We booked and paid in full for a car directly through europcar.
We received booking confirmation with a reminder to bring along your passport, driving licence and credit or debit card in order to collect your car.
Upon arrival, we were told we could not hire the car because we didn’t have a credit card for a deposit, despite the booking confirmation saying to bring a debit OR credit card.
She then told us she couldn’t guarantee we’d receive a refund as in her words “it’s not my fault you’ve not got a credit card, that’s your own fault”…
She was incredibly rude and seriously unhelpful.
We had to contact Europcar UK in order for them to cancel our booking and issue a refund, and they sounded very surprised on the phone that we were not able to hire a car due to having no credit card.
We’ve used Europcar in many different countries for car hire, and have never received service so bad!
ARNAQUE bien rodée
Nous avons réservé et payé en ligne mais une fois arrivé sur place, Eurpacar Chania, il nous que dit que notre carte est une CB de débit (de type VISA) et que pour finaliser la location, il faut s'acquitter d'une taxe suplémentaire d'environ 120€ si l'on veut une voiture de location. Et aussi il faut payer directement la caution qui sera restitué au retour de la voiture. D'une location de base réglée en ligne 316 € pour 1 semaine . Nous nous sommes retrouvé à payer 420 € en plus soit 730 € pour finaliser la location. Pas de solution possible sinon nous perdons notre réservation en ligne. En plus le personnel n'est pas accueillant, froid aigri et il veut seulement que l'on paie des options en supplémentaire. A FUIR !
Une honte !! Partez avec une CARTE GOLD pour ne pas avoir de surprise !
