I would strongly advise all educators to be cautious supply teaching with Engage Education. I had three safeguarding allegations that I firmly believe were unfounded and stemmed from the class not wanting me as their teacher, likely due to a significant difference in expectations compared to their previous teacher, who had a more relaxed classroom environment — something SLT and TA's shared with me directly. In my entire teaching career, this had never happened. I didn't think much of it and I assumed the matter would be resolved fairly through an objective investigation.

Unfortunately, the investigation lacked the necessary thoroughness, and key points I raised were not fully addressed. Since then, I have gone on to be a Designated Safeguarding Lead myself, so I understand the actions that should have been taken. The more I think about it, the more I realise how poorly the whole situation was handled.

Firstly, the investigation itself lacked the necessary thoroughness. Despite a two-year track record with the agency and no prior safeguarding issues, multiple concerns were raised against me in a very short period at one specific school. This unusual cluster of allegations, as detailed (but ignored) in my appeal, warranted a much closer and more critical examination than it received.

The investigation noted that a significant portion of the claims might be false. It was also stated that the school reportedly failed to respond to requests for clarification. This lack of follow-up from the school, and the decision to substantiate the concern without conclusive evidence, is deeply concerning and suggests a lack of thoroughness in the process. Another part of the investigation said the outcome was based on a "balance of probability" which was heavily influenced by the testimonies of young children... hardly reliable evidence to say something is substantiated.

Engage Education's response to my initial appeal barely addressed the key points I raised, including consistency of evidence, potential biases, and lack of additional information from the school. The email received simply stated that concerns have been recorded as "low-level" and that safeguarding concerns had not been confirmed, while simultaneously requiring safeguarding training "following a low-level concern being substantiated." This appears contradictory and caused further confusion, as the language used implied a substantiated outcome, despite being labelled ‘low-level’, and the email fails to provide any detailed re-evaluation of the evidence or acknowledgement of the significant issues I raised regarding the investigation's fairness and thoroughness. This lack of direct engagement significantly impacts professional standing and raises serious doubts about the diligence of the process.

While I fully support the principle of taking safeguarding allegations seriously, I believe Engage Education’s investigation lacked the diligence required to ensure fair outcomes. I urge the agency to review its processes to ensure greater transparency, thoroughness, and responsiveness to appeals. Educators considering working with Engage Education should be aware of these concerns. I would like to clarify that this review reflects my personal experience and perspective dealing with the South East Branch of Engage Education.

Working for Engage Education was an awesome experience. I was guided and supported throughout the process of finding employment. I worked directly with Amber Cloona as my agent. She provided me with a great opportunity, but beyond that she was always helpful and responsive if I needed anything.
