Caveat Emptor Sphygmomanometer

Purchased an android sphygmomanometer (large adult McKesson) for my father-in-law two years ago. I didn’t have use for it (he passed away shortly after I ordered it), but I had another relative whose blood pressure was creeping up slowly so I kept the device for future use. I hadn’t had to use it on her until a month ago. Imagine my disgust when I found the air bladder was half of the cuff circumference (a bp cuff bladder should cover 80-100% of the patient’s upper arm which it did not). The large description and circumference measurements of the cuff should correspond to a longer air bladder, not just increased material to make a greater length of the cuff.

Cheryl, thank you for the update, and for allowing us the chance to look into this.

As you know, we reached out to McKesson and the manufacturer directly about the bladder coverage you described. Their technical review found that this cuff's bladder measures 320mm x 145mm and is designed to meet the ISO 81060-1 standard, which evaluates coverage at the midpoint of the cuff's labeled arm-circumference range — at that midpoint, this cuff reaches 76% coverage, and even at the extreme ends of its range, coverage stays at 64% or above. The manufacturer noted that visually comparing the bladder to the full physical cuff material (rather than to the stated arm-circumference range) can make coverage look lower than it actually is. They also confirmed no recalls, complaints, or adverse events have been associated with this product, which has been on the market for decades.

We take reports like yours seriously precisely because these devices are used to make real health decisions, and we appreciate you giving us the opportunity to investigate before writing us off. If you'd still like to speak directly with the manufacturer's technical team, we're glad to arrange that — just reach out to our customer service team with your order details.

Excellent customer service

I called the customer service number with questions regarding the various ear lobe pulse oximeters. I was greeted by a rep who explained the various brands, models, & costs. He also answered my additional questions. Since I called later in the day, he went over shipping methods that would accommodate my needs. The rep exceeded my expectations in terms of professionalism, courtesy, & assistance. Later, I checked prices on various medical items available and prices were comparable to prices that I found on other websites.

I don't recommend

I ordered a medical device that began malfunctioning immediately. I reached out within the return window, explained the issues clearly, and even offered to send photos proving the item was undamaged and complete. I was told I’d receive a refund if their evaluation confirmed everything I said—but they refused to confirm the terms in writing.

The entire process remained vague and conditional. There was always room left to deny the refund once the item was returned. The tone of the communication made me increasingly uneasy, and I did not trust that a refund would be honored.

I’m now out $800. I found the experience stressful, unnecessarily combative, and risky for any customer, especially when making health-related purchases. I would not recommend this company.

NOTICE: This reviewer has repeatedly left negative feedback across many vendors and platforms, having the same problems with all, which may not reflect typical customer experiences. We encourage looking at a broader range of reviews to get a balanced perspective.

Hello Dr. O'Brien,

Thank you for your feedback. We are very sorry that you were left with a negative impression of our company. We take pride in our customer service and made significant efforts to assist you, including involving the manufacturer’s leadership and our executive team, as well as sending multiple prepaid return labels from both the manufacturer and our company.

We understand your hesitation, but we must inspect these medical devices upon return before a refund is issued. This is a standard industry practice to ensure safety and honesty, and is clearly stated in our written policy. Because the item was never returned to us, we could not complete the refund process. We wish you the best.

Customer Service Makes a Difference

I purchased a $190 pulse finger sensor pulse oximeter from Concord because it was rated the best available by a New York Times article. Cheaper pulse oximeters have never worked for me, and I thought this more expensive sensor might work better. Unfortunately, I still got widely varying readings from the oximeter, and so I gave them a 1-star rating in my online review. A couple of days after posting the review, I got a call from John, a customer service rep with Concord, inquiring about my experience and offering to help. After some discussion, he recommended a must-site sensor hand held pulse oximeter, which he said worked better for customers who experienced poor signal quality with finger only devices. The new hand-held pulse oximeter arrived by mail today, and it works much better. I get an accurate, consistent reading within about 15 seconds of attaching the sensor to my ear lobe. John sent me a prepaid mailing label to return the original pulse oximeter for credit. I am very pleased with the customer service I received.

They went above and beyond to help me troubleshoot an old device we received from the hospital that started malfunctioning. John spent time on multiple occasions helping me figure out the solution and getting us the correct parts to be able to continue to monitor my special needs daughter's oxygen concentration and pulse rate at home. I do very few reviews

I do very few reviews, but some institutions/ companies deserve them when they excel, whether good or bad. The sales reps at this company are very knowledgeable about their products and willing to help you. I nearly returned a product because it has a battery installation that is NOT intuitive. Concord is a distributor and not a manufacture, so this is not their fault. The sales reps quickly new the answer to the problem. The product is the Nonin 9590 pulse oximeter, which is a superb product; research it for yourself. I have NO relationship to any member of the company and I am NOT an investor. Here is what you need to know about the 9590: I am a retire physician and have purchased at different times four of these pulse oximeters: personal use, church emergency kit, and friend with asthma. I have used them for emergency evaluations in each situation and am very pleased. Two counter intuitive caveats that should be understood about putting in the batteries: 1) the battery lid must be pushed toward the small gap at the finger opening of the unit to open (don't pull toward you) (2) The batteries go in reverse directions to make the unit operate, however, the two springs side by side make you think the negative ends of both batteries fit against the springs. The unit won't work if the batteries an not put in exactly as directed. I don't store batteries in the unit in case they spoil and ruin the unit. In an emergency situation, these non-intuitive steps and cause confusion and delay.

Delayed items, but resolved

[ EDIT: The company tried to make things right in the end. I received my order quickly, once it did ship. I'll leave my original review, but change the rating with this amendment. ]

My life depends on my ability to test my INR on a regular basis. I ordered testing chips for my device from Concord Health Supply, expecting them to be delivered within the time frame that is given on their website (2-4 days). Instead, my order sat as "Processing" for a week with no update, no e-mails, nothing. I had to reach out to them to figure out what the delay was about, only to learn that, apparently, the chips are on backorder and "should be shipped sometime this week" with no guarantee on when, or even IF they would be sent, only promising that I would receive an e-mail once they actually WERE sent. It would have been nice to know the item was on backorder when I PLACED the order instead of a week later, only after my own insistence. I would have ordered from somewhere else if I had known.

Concord Health and John

Concord Health and Customer Service Manager, John. This is the go to company for medical equipment. John helped me select a 02 wrist monitor. I had purchased 3 others from other company's. They were horrible to use and horrible to try and set up. John helped me download their easy to use app so that I can record nightly results. It arrived today and included great simple to understand instructions from Concord. John will help me with connecting results to app so that I can print and take to my Dr. Wish I would have found them first. This is a company you can trust. Highly recommend.
