2024 8.8adv
Bought an 8.8adv in 2024. No end of issues with the brakes, gears, chain, pedals... Basically if it moves, it has broken at some point. Absolute pile of overpriced, cheap crap. Wouldn't even give it away if it means inflicting such a pile of junk on somebody else. Avoid at all costs.
The free hub locked on a Boardmam adv…
The free hub locked on a Boardmam adv 8.9. No branding on the rear hub or freehub.
Halfords do not even know what the part is and were unable to help. I tried three in the shop none fitted.
My advice....do not buy a boardman bike. Buy a bike with branded parts on it.
I have 3 Boardman
I have 3 Boardman, never again. Absolute crap and they didn't even have a spare fork for a 2024 urb bike...
Never respond to emails or answer…
Never respond to emails or answer phone. Absolutely no after sales support. Any problems and you are completely on your own. Outrageous.
Boardman MHT8.9 One year update…
This is my third review of my Boardman MHT8.9 2025 spec and is a 1200mile update. After some initial issues with the bike, it has run faultlessly. With the Psylo fork, compliant frame and 2.4 inch tyres, the bike is really comfortable over all terrain including red trails. Nothing has gone wrong or worn (though chain will need replacing soon) and it rides as new.
The only slight downside, and totally my fault, is that I added slime tubes instead of going tubeless and this has added about 1.5kg to the weight and significantly affected rolling resistance, so one to change over asap.
In general, I’m delighted with the bike now and it meets my needs perfectly.
No rear suspension on a £1'000 bike (??)
I bought a Boardman CB Pro, second hand. When new it was worth around £1000
Bike is very light, nice disc, hydraulic brakes and gears.
What annoyed me is lack rear suspension (??). In a bike for this sort of money I think it's absurd. Also: the way you attach front mudguard (it has to be mountain bike mudguard) is silly because it's 10 inches away from the tyre on a road bike (??).
I still enjoy riding it but I wouldn't buy another one.
Not honouring frame warranty
Not honouring frame warranty as need to go through Halfords and they reject if not serviced by themselves.
Emailed directly but they ignored (they did reply when i bought the bike!)
Ignore the Boardman name
First ignore the Boardman name - he sold it to Halfords and they supply and do after service.
I boght a ADV 8.6 with a fazua motor. It has failed several times and they now have washed their hands of it so i am left with a nice gravel bike (but not the electric assist I paid for. the motor and bottom bracket are in one unit so any minor problem with the bottom bracket can be very expensive. I note the version has a different motor so maybe if you buy a new one you will be OK . HOWEVER, if anything goes wrong the after sales is applalling. Its all organised via a call centre who dont seem to talk to the technicians in the actual shops. i will never buy a bike from Halfords again.
Mht8.9 update
I put a review on Trustpilot earlier this year based on my experience with my new hardtail which replaced a Whyte 605 and was critical of cable rattles and paint on an otherwise potentially good bike. Well the rattles got worse so I took the bike back to Halfords where the technician immediately identified the noise as a broken spring in the fork - full credit to him! I had a long wait for the fork to be replaced due to parts availability and when it was, it was upgraded to the latest Psylo Gold which has literally transformed the bike. Ok so I got the cable rattles wrong, as there aren’t any now and the bike rides very plushly (almost like my Whyte FS). Perhaps Boardman should consider upgrading to the Psylo for all new sales and my comments still stand about the paint, but my satisfaction rating has changed based on the bike I now have from 4 to 5 stars
I have a boardman hyb 8.8
I have a boardman hyb 8.8. Started off great bike until I got hit by a car and my left crank arm got damaged and the threads for the pedal got stripped. No customer support from boardman just a link to halfords who are unable to find a replacement. After many hours scouring the Internet I am unable to find a replacement. So it looks like I need to purchase a new bike. It's a shame it wasn't a bad bike but if I knew you were unable to buy spares or boardman didn't care enough about their customers to even have a customer support service. I would have chosen a different bike.
Boardman ADV-E 8.9 Electric Adventure Bike 2025 model
Update: I have now ridden 1000 miles on it and have raised the stars to 5, I love this bike. I have done 9 charge cycles to cover 1000 miles, BUT I only use the motor when I really need that extra help, which is exactly why I chose this bike. It looks great a rides very well. Only slight negative is the charging process completes, I.e. turns it self off. but the % charge hasn't changed... Have to pretend to charge it again and it quickly jumps to 100%. But I still love it :-)
Only 4 stars so far as I have only had it for 2 weeks, but all looking good. The bike looks great, everyone likes the matt blue finish and with the battery in the downtube its not obviously an electric bike. I managed to get the app fully working after a few trys. Only riden 100 miles so far mostly on road. The range on assist level 1 is about 30 miles, but if you only use it when you really need help, it could last 60 miles :-) I swapped the Boardman saddle with the one from my old bike, just a personal thing. The upgraded groupset works well and probably worth the extra £500 with the hydraulic brakes. I may change the tyres at some point, as the ones supplied are a bit chunky. I am liking it so far, only issue is a slightly sticking/rubbing rear disc pad.
brought Fromm Halfords
brought Fromm Halfords, 5 weeks ago, great bike , great , every was great , looks the way it rode, brakes , gears, my son absolutely loved it ,,,, and then the frame snapped at the rear suspension!!!!! gutted to say the least , my son was devastated, but ill give Halfords all dew and credit they offered a new frame or a full refund, which I was gunna go for the frame until some 1 piped up it happened to theirs !!!!! full refund , and now its hunt the new bike again, gutted great looking bike
Awful when it goes wrong.
Awful when it goes wrong.
The cheap sourced parts are not available to replace, so when a crank breaks you're stuck with a bike you can't use. Even the bike shops are perplexed.
In the far east or USA the type of crank arm isn't available for retail. Utterly useless after care by Halfords who won't communicate. Useless!!!!
Bought a Boardman HYB 8.9e
Bought a Boardman HYB 8.9e. I've given it a low score to highlight a potential problem.
The bike itself is great, but the Drivepack has a serious problem if you want to commute daily. as It takes 8 hrs for the battery to drop into its deep sleep mode, loosing between 5% & 8% capacity whilst doing so [ref. FAZUA support europe].
If you do a 9 to 5 job 5 days a week, the battery is awake for 80 hrs loosing you between 50% & 80% charge, and that's before you have rode anywhere, and does not include travelling time. You would be lucky to ride more than 2 miles each way for 5 days without needing to re-charge mid-week.
Remeber not to leave this type of battery charging unattended because of the risk of fire.
Boardman HYB 8.9e from Halfords
I've bought a Boardman HYB 8.9e from Halfords. There was a minor confusion over the delivery date, and the person building it for me didn't align the rear wheel magnet with the speed sensor, but otherwise good.
With one significant caveat, the bike is good to ride. It's light and responsive, and the battery and motor work well, giving me over 40 miles range with +60% battery remaining. (This is based on having the motor on standby on the flat and gentle inclines.)
Downsides:
1: the motor makes a clattering noise on standby.
2: I had to change the pedals to ones that would accept toeclips (my choice).
3: the saddle. I honestly believe that the saddle designer can trace their lineage to the Marquis de Sade. The last 5 miles of my 40 mile ride were agony, and I am still suffering the after effects 2 days later. My advice is get a cutaway saddle ASAP. (Male, aged 68 btw.)
Boardman Hyb 8.8
Boardman Hybrid 8.8
Parts are very cheap and customer service non existent. On the plus side, it’s light and looks good.
Right pedal sheared off after 3years - this should not happen to any bicycle, never mind a £800 bike. It seems a common issue along with other troublesome issues.
Avoid unfortunately
Boardman adv 8.9, 7 months old and not rideable
Bought 8.9 adv because of the good reviews. Second trip our, gears started slipping. Within a month, the through axles started working loose and have to be tightened after every ride. Then the free wheel hub started jamming pushing the chain off. Halfords tell me the hub is corroded. At first they said components aren't covered by their warranty. After having to write to their CEO to get an answer (customer services not responding) I've been told it's not covered because it's wear and tear. If you get a good one, great. If you get a bad one like I did, you're on your own
Cheap parts cheap gearing .
Got a old boardman comp which I still ride today great bike , went to Halford for a replacement, really disappointed with the newer version. Plastic break leaves, (mine aluminium). Cheap breaks, and gears . My old one all spram high spec.
They really cut corners on the boardmans. To replace mine with the same specifications the guy from Halford said you looking at well over £1000 Mark.
The new boardman hybrid is a cheap replacement from the old Hybrid. Not worth the money . I walked away .
Great bikes with poor components and zero customer service
I've had a couple of Boardman bikes and they're great bikes generally, but let down by cheap components and poor after sales service.
My first boardman needed a new wheel when the unsealed bearings on the hub started to get grit inside, damaging the surface of the hub.
Second bike for my fiance had the handlebars lock up whilst she was riding it which was very scary and dangerous! I took the headset apart and found cheap unsealed bearing races again that had rusted and disintegrated. Replaced the headset with sealed bearings and the bike is better than new.
Boardman don't have any customer service team and there's no way to contact the company directly. Customers are referred to Halfords, who's own customer service is getting worse or Tredz who tried to help but had no details on touch up paint.
If you buy a boardman, check the bearings and replace with sealed units before they fail.
Fantastic!!!
Just bought the Boardman ADV8.9 adventure bike and first impressions are wow!!! This is my 4th Boardman bike in the last 12 years. I remember getting my first Team bike in 2012 and I had that for about 7 years and had so many fantastic rides with that bike! Then I got the CXR9.0 in 2016 and still have it. I've done NC500 once and the Outer Hebrides (3 times) on this bike as well as lots of long day trips, like the Borders and Trossachs. i've got my everyday reliable hybrid too. I've been looking at getting into a bit more gravel / adventure stuff so decided to go for the ADV8.9. The ADV8.9 orange colour looks stunning with a good gearing ratio with x2 front chainring, 48/32 and 11/36 cassette, hydraulic brakes (excellent), great tyre clearance, currently running 40mm Schwable, nice relaxed geometry and I actually prefer Aluminum over Carbon as I gives me the option for a bike rack as well as bike packing. I also like external cabling easier for maintenance none of this stem/head tube internal stuff. Shimano GRX perfect, who needs Di2! Overall fantastic price for the specification! Looking forward on doing some multi day adventures and hopefully planning the "Badger Divide" route later on in the year, Inverness to Glasgow - off road! Chris and his team are excellent.
Thanks a lot Boardman!
