As a Dom Care business owner

As a Dom Care business owner, I feel compelled to share my experience with Birdie, especially for those considering their system. I also have friends in the industry who have encountered similar issues.
From a carer’s perspective, the app is excellent. It’s fast, clean, and logs everything efficiently—kudos to the design team.

However, from an owner/manager/coordinator viewpoint, I strongly recommend considering Care Planner. I regret not choosing them initially and am still contemplating the switch.

Birdie falls short in several critical areas:
1. Admin System Settings/Implementation: The system feels like I’m working for Birdie rather than having a contract with them. For example, adding a new staff member resulted in an error because they were already registered with another agency. Support had to merge the profile, causing delays. This dependency on support for such tasks is frustrating and inefficient.

2. Support: Support is only available until 8 PM, and their response times can be agonizingly slow. There were instances where I waited for hours just to add a new staff member to the system. It feels like they control whether a staff member can work for my company, which is absurd.

3. Communication: They once had an emergency number that was turned off without notifying providers. I discovered this when my staff couldn’t get through. Later, I was told it was due to high call volumes, yet they offer phone support to families using the app—why? If a family struggles with the app, they should go through the provider, not Birdie, and leave phone support for emergencies.

Other issues include:
• A staff member logged in and out of a visit by mistake, and Birdie wouldn't allow us to correct it. They insisted it was the carer’s responsibility, which is not reliable in our industry. This can lead to missed visits and questions from LA/NHS contract managers and CQC.
• Problems with medication logging and other system functionalities.
• A ‘switch agency’ feature that rarely works due to access issues. We’ve had staff registered with multiple agencies, but support claims they can only access one agency at a time which is nonsense.
• Robotic chat support responses that rarely resolve issues. Their tiered chat support system is ineffective, as in my experience none seem capable of resolving critical problems.

After struggling for a call, I finally spoke with my 'account manager' and a senior manager on a teams call, which was pointless. They even suggested paying for phone support, which I found outrageous. Nevertheless, I agreed due to necessity, but it's evident that no one at Birdie has practical Dom Care experience which was also confirmed by my ‘account manager’

Managing a service with over 200 clients is impossible with Birdie. Ensure you have a backup system if you decide to use their system.

The team here have all seen the review, genuinely appreciate your insights and are sorry to hear about these challenges. Therefore we’ll share some initial responses below - but also an invitation to catch up with the team directly, so we get the full picture.

Firstly, we’re happy to hear that you and team find the Birdie carer app clean, efficient and fast! Our design team works hard to make the Birdie carer app a great experience for those using it, and your positive comments mean a lot.

On the concerns you've highlighted:

1. Admin System Settings/Implementation: That is correct; phone numbers and emails act as the unique identifier for carers on Birdie, so merging these things across different agencies does take a quick confirmation on all sides. The security of anyone who uses the Birdie platform is very, very important - and simply merging the same phone number across agencies could lead to a data breach. That is why in a handful of cases we may ask further questions or provide other solutions before we merge the profile.
2. Support: We’re sorry to hear you experienced slow response times from our support team. This comes as a surprise as our first response time is currently an average of 3.20 minutes during office hours. Are you able to provide us with the chat that was particularly slow? We’d like to investigate this further - thanks!
3. Communication: We’d really like to learn more here as this is something that Birdie has never offered (an emergency number for providers or families using the app).

On the other concerns you’ve shared with us here:

- Logging in/Out: If a carer checks in and out of the wrong visit, it isn’t possible for this to be reversed. However, it is possible for the carer to complete an unscheduled visit, capturing anything they need so no one misses out. It’s also possible for the agency to manually update the check-in/check-out times for each of those visits so everything gets captured.
- Medication/System: If you could let us know what specific issues you’ve had with medication logging that would be very helpful for the team.
- Support: Our team are available from 7 am to 8 pm, covering 92% of the overall support chat volume during this time. During off-hours, our AI workflow handles around 35% of incoming messages, with the rest resolved by the team starting at 7 am. However, even through that AI workflow, we have ensured that our partners can raise incidents with Birdie both in and out of hours should a part of the system not work as expected that could impact the care you provide; and have a member of the Birdie team on hand at all times to assess and fix these major issues.

Hopefully the above addresses the key points you’ve shared with us - however a written review response is only half of it. We are very impressed with Birdie

We are very impressed with Birdie. The home care solution they have created is without doubt the best solution on the market at the moment. The software is intuitive and every single member of our team (including people who are not IT savvy) was able to pick it up really quickly with very little training needed.

The rostering tool of the software is so simple and it is designed in such a way where it speeds the whole process of rostering up.

The care planning tool is fantastic and has everything you need to create an holistic care plan for every single client. There are pre-built assessments, eMar, task planners, and a whole host more.

There are lots of other great features to such as the messaging feature, auditing, outcomes, client portals, etc. And the Carer App is so well designed, anyone can use it in an instant.

Finally, Birdie itself is a very strong company, positioning itself as a partner to home care providers, not just a service provider. Every single person we communicated with couldn't do enough to help us. We have a lot of unique little processes, as many care providers do, and finding a team of people who embrace that and are willing to work out solutions with you, is quite rare to find. You can tell the culture at Birdie is very strong and the team they have built is so customer centric. We love it.

Not so good as people said

the new version of Birdie is horrible to get to the medication section, the steps have doubled, also for daily tasks it was better before when these 2 sections were separated, they still appear as they were in unscheduled visits. Also for Live in care it is difficult to set the schedule...we work 24/24 and 7 out of 7 we don't have visit schedules.

If you could give us an idea of what is causing the most frustration, we'd really appreciate it - that way we can learn what about the most recent update has caused an issue for you, so we can see how many other people have had the same concern and do something about it.

I know the most recent updates for the app have included the ability to easily view timesheets, see worked hours and access much more of your schedule - so if it's these updates or something else, we're very keen to hear what the concerns are.

Birdie is one of the worst care apps…

Birdie is one of the worst care apps I’ve used. Too many actions required for too few outcomes. Any app that requires video training and booklet to understand, is not a good app. It has no intuitive qualities. It’s impossible to edit, and in my opinion, wholly inappropriate for the kind of care work we undertake.

Birdie is great fir me becouse l don't need to use another way to confirm my shifts or to made my reports. It is great as well for medication still there are some things could be improved this app is good
