The book that said out loud what no one…

The book that said out loud what no one in our industry ever dared to say

I work in luxury hospitality. Have done for over twenty years. I picked up Rich Chef Poor Chef on a quiet Sunday afternoon thinking it would be a light read about kitchen management, as I cook a lot as passion. By Tuesday I had dog-eared half the pages.
What the author does in this book is rare. He talks to you. Not at you, not around you directly to you. I kept putting the book down thinking, “how does he know this?”
The situations he describes, the silent struggles around money, self-worth, and financial independence in the culinary and hospitality world, are things I have lived but never once heard anyone in this industry say out loud. Not in a conference. Not in a training room. Not in twenty plus years of industry conversations.
The real-life examples are where this book earns its place on your shelf permanently.

They are not polished case studies pulled from a business school textbook. They feel lived-in, honest, and at times uncomfortably familiar.
That is the mark of someone writing from experience, not theory.

I also took his further reading suggestions seriously something I rarely do with any book. Every single recommendation was worth the time.
The list is curated with genuine care, not filler titles thrown in to pad a bibliography.
Each one deepened what he had already introduced in the chapters.
If you work in food, hospitality, or any service profession and you have ever felt that your career has given you skills but not security, read this book. It will not just inspire you. It will reframe how you think about your entire professional life.

This is the conversation our industry has needed for decades.

Reality and the real world of a chef

I’m a chef / Restaurateur and I’ve read a few personal development and finance books over the years, but nothing ever really clicked. Most are written for office workers with regular schedules, not for people like us who live in hotels.

This book just gets it. The author understands our world the long hours, the financial struggles, all of it. I found myself nodding through the whole thing because it resonated with my experience 100%.

Honestly feel lucky I found this. Never seen anything like it before that’s actually designed for how chefs work and think.

Fair warning this isn’t for everyone. If you’re happy coasting, skip it. But if you have a growth mindset and want to build something better for yourself, it’s worth your time.

Even though it’s aimed at chefs, I think people in other demanding industries would get a lot from it too.

Really glad I picked this up.

A must-read, even if you’re not a chef.

I may not be a chef, but I truly enjoyed reading this book. Rich Chef Poor Chef offers valuable insights into success and finance, drawn from the author’s real-life experiences. His passion for being a chef shines through in the practical examples throughout the book.

The message is clear. Greatness isn’t achieved without intention. You are, in essence, the head chef of your own life, responsible for the choices and outcomes you create.

It is an inspiring and thought-provoking read that encourages self-reflection and practical action. A must-read for those wanting to improve their life, build better habits, and take greater control of their personal and financial future.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Really enjoyed this book. It’s not just about cooking or skills—it focuses a lot on self-awareness, values, and making the right decisions in your career and life.

The examples are very real and relatable, especially for those in hospitality. It made me reflect on my own mindset and what truly defines success.

Simple, practical, and inspiring. Definitely worth a read 👍

It’s rare to come across such a witty…

It’s rare to come across such a witty and insightful narrative written by a chef speaking from lived experience. This book, by someone who can laugh at both himself and life while expressing hard truths with a refined subtlety, compellingly questions the notions of “rich” and “poor” from within the world of gastronomy. With a truly immersive and engaging style, it draws you step by step into the realities of the kitchen. Highly recommended.

Worth reading even if you've never picked up a spatula

I'm a marketer, not a chef, so I wasn't expecting to get this much out of the book. But a lot of what he writes about applies way beyond the kitchen.

The learning section was probably my favourite part. The stuff on spaced repetition and active reading isn't new, but the way he frames it around a chef's life makes it click differently. And the financial literacy chapters are honestly overdue — I don't think any industry does a good job of teaching this, not just hospitality.

Yusuf has had a serious career — decades across different countries and regions — and the book feels like it. It's not theory. Recommended, chef or not.

Finally found something that actually…

Finally found something that actually speaks to my reality

I’m an entrepreneur sicne about 25 years now, and I’ve picked up a few business and finance books over the years trying to figure out how to actually build some wealth. Honestly, most of them just didn’t connect with me they were written for people with 9-to-5 jobs or corporate careers, not for someone who works nights, weekends, and holidays.
This book is different. It’s like the author actually gets what our lives are like. The financial struggles, the long hours, the passion that keeps us in this industry even when the money isn’t great it’s all there. I found myself nodding along to almost every page because it resonated with my own experience completely.
I’m really lucky I came across this book. I’ve honestly never seen anything like it before something specifically designed for chefs and how we actually work and think. It’s not dumbed down, and it’s not generic advice repackaged. It’s real.
I will say this book isn’t for everyone. If you’re happy with where you are and don’t really want to change anything, you probably won’t get much from it. But if you have a growth mindset and you’re ready to do something different to create a better situation for yourself, this is worth reading.
Even though it’s written for chefs, I think a lot of the concepts could apply to other people in demanding industries too. The principles are solid.
Glad I found this one.

The Book Every Chef Should Read at Least Once

Just finished reading Rich Chef Poor Chef by Yusuf Yaran, and honestly… this is one book you should not miss if you’re serious about growing your career in hospitality.

You can really feel it’s written by someone with many years in hospitality. It’s not textbook knowledge, but full of real-life stories, the kind you only understand after long shifts, tough days, and dealing with real guests.

What makes this book special is how honest and relatable it is. Every page feels practical and real.

Especially for chefs who feel stuck, lost, or struggling, this book can open your eyes, reset your mindset, and give you a new sense of direction.

Definitely worth a read.
